21 year old Bruce Wayne's war on the Red Hood Gang is rough on him as he struggle with his first forays into crime fighting working out all the kinks before he wears the bat suit.

He’s so focused on the goal of fighting crime that he’s not…minding his surroundings. He’s so busy being on the offensive that his personality is becoming that other definition of “offensive.”

Bruce Wayne is content to let the world think Bruce Wayne is dead so he can fight his one-man war alone. But uncle Philip tells Bruce to meet him at the Gotham museum at midnight. Bruce finds his uncle waiting and tries to discuss the Red Hood's acquisition of Wayne Tech weaponry, and suggests they shut the division down until they can find out who the inside man is. Philip can't do that and asks Bruce once again if he'll return to the company, saying they could discuss this all then, but Bruce still refuses which causes uncle Philip to play his hand.

The lights turn on, and there's a surprise welcome home party for Bruce, and the media has been invited. Bruce isn't too happy and immediately tries to leave through a different part of the museum. Edward Nygma eventually finds Bruce, and introduces himself as Philip's advisor, but mentions Philip hardly takes his advice anymore as two enter a little battle of wits.

You were just a few panels short from showing my favorite part of the Bruce and Alfred scene--

As Alfred walks away, he hears Bruce say "come back." Alfred turns around and sees Bruce, holding the grappling gun, sheepishly saying "I was talking to the hook." Just so awkward. :D

But yeah, I'm really enjoying this take on the origin. In some ways, it feels like the standard Batman origin, albeit blown up to such a scope that not even Nolan could pull some of it off, and then in other ways completely subverting your expectations. Really good stuff, definitely can't wait to see where Snyder takes it next.

Ok, why would anyone ever need a voice-controlled grappling hook, a device that you need to be holding in your hands for it to be useful?

It's like that timer batarang from an earlier issue. When would you ever want to throw a batarang and have it come back to you in precisely three minutes?

As great as the panel of Alfred slapping Bruce is, to me it just feels out of character that Bruce would treat Alfred so disrespectfully. I could see Bruce raging out in front of Alfred, or subjecting Alfred to one of his incredibly foul moods, but violently grabbing him by the tie and calling him a coward?
Batman being childish or an ass isn't out of character for him, but in this instance it just feels wrong to me.

I think this is actually a good character moment as a way of building trust between them. Bruce is finding his boundaries and Alfred makes it perfectly clear that there's a line he shouldn't cross. It gives Bruce a sense that someone is willing to tell him 'no' and 'you won't manhandle ME, even if you do it to everyone else.'

I also kinda see it as a father/son moment. The son oversteps and that parent showing his authority.

It does work as a good scene in showing a developing parent/child relationship, but it just seems wrong to me in the fact that it's Bruce and Alfred. I mean, Bruce is flat out insulting and manhandling the person who has been his replacement father for years since his parents' deaths. I get that Bruce is still young here and unsure of himself, but I feel like Alfred shouldn't have to set boundaries for Bruce or demand his respect here, because those should have already long ago been given

You say that like stubborn young men don't often do this to their parental figures to assert themselves. It's sadly rather common.

My problem isn't that I think it's an unrealistic depiction of a child-parent relationship, just that I feel it's out of character for Bruce to treat Alfred that way. Even if he is a 'stubborn young man'. And even though Bruce is an ass, I've always seen him as somewhat traditional minded (like he values family, treating parents with respect, etc).
And now I just sound like an old fogey who should just get with the new comic times already
I admit the scene does make me interested in seeing how their relationship will strengthen over the course of the story.

I think that boundaries were long ago given, and that they worked at the time. With Bruce starting a new chapter in his life, and taking on all this new responsibility they just needed to be reestablished. Bruce is only 21 here, and by pretty much every legal definition an adult.

Alfred is just making it clear that despite all the changes the fundamental dynamic between the two of them should remain one of respect.

I'd like to think that years of being away from Alfred (I guess he left when he was in his late teens) made him forget boundaries of the relationship, he came back a different person, meaning his relationships with people also changed, he has to build what you expect from him with Alfred starting from here.

Well, looking at it in that context, it does make more sense. But to me it just feels wrong if Bruce isn't treating Alfred without at least some respect (due in parts to how he was raised, and how Alfred has been such an important figure in his life)

I think everyone is allowed to be a little petulant when the situation pushes them there, he's new to what he's doing, he's stressed and he's experiencing a lot of 'firsts'. He'll most likely iron things out with Alfred as we go through this origin and he matures.

One thing Scott has made clear is that this Bruce is definitely a little immature.

This actually looks pretty good. As a rule, I generally don't read Batman, but I might have to check this out.

They;d make a very good couple and in some continuities, an attractive one. At least they'd have great banter... (and interesting pillow talk?)

After that sigh? No, you are certainly not.

They really would make a cute couple. Kind of like Bruce and Selina, only with an attraction that's less physical and more intellectual.

At this point they seem to be telegraphing that Joker is the Red Hood so heavily that it either has to be a red herring or it's the most blatant foreshadowing ever.

I like this. Of the majority of the new 52, the bat-titles have been the most consistently good. (Although all stories could have been told in the old canon). What I like here are the eyes. The sudden realization of what Bruce and Alfred have done subverts the old dynamic and makes them appear human. Bruce overstepped his boundaries and was dealt with by his "father". Never has that happened. Alfred, meanwhile, shows that he acts as he does out of want, not duty. The dynamic is established in a manner that shows that no matter who he fights, he will not act this way towards Alfred. Alfred will speak his mind and Bruce will take it. So far, fun origin discussion.

Hmm so if I'm correct in what I see so far, based on just that, Batman Year Zero is pretty much Batman by way of Smallville, where we follow the hero before he takes on his iconic identity, where he still manages to have adventures, but wears clothing that references his costume in some way, shape, or form all while still developing what he needs to finally become Batman. Am I right?
