starwolf_oakley: Charlie Crews vs. Faucet (Default)
[personal profile] starwolf_oakley posting in [community profile] scans_daily
The first page from AVENGERS ACADEMY #30 after the cut. Some of the Avengers Academy kids talk amongst themselves about the Utopia kids dropped off while the Avengers and the X-Men try to "deal" with the Phoenix Force. It seems to be a simple "Stay there until the grownups save the world" situation, but things are complicated.

Warning: Race card playing.

X-23 and Finesse talk it out for a bit.

The Utopia kids want to go get chicken and waffles. The Academy kids don't think this is a good idea. And it seems neither class learned much about solving tense situations without extreme violence.

During this, Sebastian Shaw is fighting his way through the teachers. Shaw wants to get to the Utopia students, presumably to kill them in order to punish Emma Frost for mindwiping him. Only his plan might not be murder.

"Your Race means you're used to prejudice and racism, right? So you have to agree with me when I say something is prejudiced and/or Racist!"
Always a good starting point kid, stay classy.

Makes you wonder if in the Marvel-verse, does the South Park there make fun of the mutant stuff too?

Happens to me a lot, a hell of a lot. Every organisation and their poster childs wants to put a flag in your garden.

Like I have a friend who is Jewish but doesnt support Israel or some friends who didnt want to go to the gay parade or me when I went to New York and discovered many america-born Latins may share the lenguage but dont know a thing, read all this books on southamerican history and make up some kind of fictional region that other people wont do (but when they do is plain racist) but they can because they have the right to do It.

It really sounds convincent that Wiz Kid is asian-american, but his reaction to Hazmat is less convincent, there should be shame you cant be oblivious when some one gives you that answer. The point of view shifted to x-23 too fast

I'm going to be pretty disappointed if the AA kids win this. They've been being trained for, what, four months in universe? The X-kids have been doing this way longer and much harder. These kids have been to hell and back.

LITERALLY.

Of course, the kid Avengers will probably win because it's their book.

Granted, a few of the kid Avengers went through a LOT in the past four months. Though the same could be said of the X-kids.

But yeah, the AA kids are going to win because it doesn't say New X-men on the cover.

No, the X-Kids will lose because Marvel have already displayed that they don't give a fuck about the group save for a handful of them. Out of the bunch that they whittled down to make the cast more manageable during Childhood's End, there is about THREE of those kids that have retained prominence since; Anole, Rockslide and Pixie. The others have just been cast off into limbo save for cameos and appearances like this.

But then it's Gage writing, who always seems somewhat fairer when writing these kids up against others - like he did with the Runaways. Also, however, don't discount the experiences of the AA kids, because that's like, basically saying that they've no chance to win when they've been through some pretty bad stuff themselves. Fear Itself was as big as anything the NXM gang have been up against.

I'm kind of wondering if he even wants revenge for what Emma did. He seems to really hate what he used to be, and wishes to move on. He may even be thankful. I think he only escaped because he didn't feel he should be imprisoned since, in his eyes, he wasn't guilty. Of course, this is assuming he hasn't gone full evil again.

Exactly. It's the eternal nature vs. nurture debate, and I don't see a writer of mainstream books about teenager heros trying to overcome bad backgrounds coming down against nurture.

The only thing I find slightly annoying about the comment is that is done by some white guy who may just heard about in a generic summary in a book, but still tries to make it sound personal... it's kinda like seeing "Avatar" or the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" when they're talking about how bad the earth's environment and ecosystem is... when there HAS been major improvements and achievements to clean up the planet... it may not be much, but it not like we're doing nothing...

That prison remark has some truth... not like any homeless people would like to have tv or internet let alone comfortable shelters...

They're being kept there against their will, some of them are having their powers blocked, they aren't even allowed to contact their friends at the Jean Grey School in case they convinve then to side with Utopia, and a gigantic malfunctioning robot that was built to systematically hunt and eliminate mutants is being used to "detain" them, a robot that regularly screams "Destroy all mutants".

How is this even an argument? Does none of that matter because they have free Internet and cable?

Ok, fine, calling X-23 Wolvie Jr. isn't that inaccurate. But frankly, saying "I know what side she stands on" is like saying she doesn't have a mind and opinions of her own. Automatic assumption X-23 is gonna side with the person she's cloned from! Fantastic of you.

And surge has generally been a colossal ass to Laura throughout this crossover. Honestly, I get why she's angry at the situation, but in light of her past behaviour, I'm wondering what Laura would have to do to earn something approaching approval from her.

Does Surge ever have an appearance where she ISN'T yelling or complaining? Yes, often her complaints are legitimate, but it really makes her come off as a really abrasive person. She's the defacto leader why again?

Oh yeah, she gets her leadership cues from Cyclops. That explains everything.

I just want to add that for the first time in a long time I liked Finesse in this issue. She was mostly ignored during the Runaways issues and didn't have a big part in the previous arc.
But here not only is she the one person who offers Laura a balanced look at the whole situation, but also a balanced view on Laura's own inner conflict. And all that is done without disregarding Finesse's own "Autism" (Not sure if that's how they define it).

Considering that the Utopia X-Men pretty much told the Academy staff to fuck off when they tried to establish friendly ties before AvX (roughly paraphrased: "We're teaching our kids to fight a war; if you want to play baseball, I hear Wolverine has a school now."), I don't see that they would have accepted the invite.

It always makes me uncomfortable when they use real life examples of discrimination in the X-books. Like I know mutants are a minority and it's all allegory. But there's a fine line between being a symbolic idea of a minority in the Marvel universe and having Kitty Pryde sprouting the n-word.

In our world I can see it being an issue, in the MU, it actually seems sort of fair, given the blanket discrimination that mutants face.
