The first page from AVENGERS ACADEMY #30 after the cut. Some of the Avengers Academy kids talk amongst themselves about the Utopia kids dropped off while the Avengers and the X-Men try to "deal" with the Phoenix Force. It seems to be a simple "Stay there until the grownups save the world" situation, but things are complicated.

Warning: Race card playing.

X-23 and Finesse talk it out for a bit.

The Utopia kids want to go get chicken and waffles. The Academy kids don't think this is a good idea. And it seems neither class learned much about solving tense situations without extreme violence.

During this, Sebastian Shaw is fighting his way through the teachers. Shaw wants to get to the Utopia students, presumably to kill them in order to punish Emma Frost for mindwiping him. Only his plan might not be murder.

Oh em gee. Seriously. Like, "They're being confined here against their will with a SENTINEL, but it's ok because they have wireless and television!"

Ok, fine, calling X-23 Wolvie Jr. isn't that inaccurate. But frankly, saying "I know what side she stands on" is like saying she doesn't have a mind and opinions of her own. Automatic assumption X-23 is gonna side with the person she's cloned from! Fantastic of you.

Color me unendeared.

This is the problem with big events like this. Group A is made out to be a bunch of martyrs and Group B is made out to be a bunch of assholes. Only because there's so many writers involved in a big event like this, it's difficult to tell who's who, but at the moment, nearly everyone other than a handful of the kids - Hazmat is being surprisingly objective here - is falling into the 'asshole' category.

It's like Civil War 2.0 and Marvel have decided this one can fuck the X-Men up since they were excluded from the last one.

For all of the problems with Dark Reign and Siege, I did like that it pitted superheroes against supervillains instead of other superheroes.

A "Good vs. Good" scenario isn't necessarily bad, but when more than one writer is involved along with editorial, it's impossible for one side to NOT seem worse than the other, and for this to be different between writers.

No, a good versus good scenario CAN be amazing. It can be really well done. But Marvel have just gone through several years where it was meant to be good versus good, and one side were made out to look like a bunch of fascists thanks to Millar's writing. This looks set to do the same for BOTH sides - the X-Men are behaving like a bunch of cretins and seemingly thinking they can harness the Phoenix to benefit them and mutantkind (way to go waddling toward Magneto as your major inspiration, Scott), and the other side is a bunch of complete idiots who are assaulting what is basically a foreign nation, trying to kidnap a girl, and right in the middle is Wolverine, who is taking the prize of Complete Fucking Idiot by being on both sides and attempting to murder the girl for no reason.

In fairness, the X-Plan is actually viable. The Phoenix has proven that it is controllable when it is bonded to a host, and Hope has every intention of being the Mutant Messiah. The biggest problem is that Scott has basically done jack shit to properly prepare her.

Scott might have done nothing to prepare her, but we've seen that she's hardly an angel anyway in the pages of GH. Plus, she's been raised by Cable in a variety of violent, hyper-dystopian situations, chased by one of her own kind. Given her past and some of her choices so far, that is NOT the kind of person you would want a space-borne cosmic entity bonded to.

Again, both sides in this are idiots. The X-Plan makes them look like the Brotherhood of Mutants and basically kicks Scott into the role of Magneto, even lampshaded in the recent Magneto miniseries. It's enough to make me wish Xavier would come along, mind-stun them all, and say he's slapped a fucking trademark on the X-Men name and concept, because Scott and his team are so far from their original intentions it's insane.
