The first page from AVENGERS ACADEMY #30 after the cut. Some of the Avengers Academy kids talk amongst themselves about the Utopia kids dropped off while the Avengers and the X-Men try to "deal" with the Phoenix Force. It seems to be a simple "Stay there until the grownups save the world" situation, but things are complicated.

Warning: Race card playing.

X-23 and Finesse talk it out for a bit.

The Utopia kids want to go get chicken and waffles. The Academy kids don't think this is a good idea. And it seems neither class learned much about solving tense situations without extreme violence.

During this, Sebastian Shaw is fighting his way through the teachers. Shaw wants to get to the Utopia students, presumably to kill them in order to punish Emma Frost for mindwiping him. Only his plan might not be murder.

Surge is the de facto leader because Emma was mad at Hellion that day.

Because that's such a great reason to make someone the leader of a group of young superhumans.

TBF, it's not like Emma expected them to go into real combat so soon after that, and the team did handle themselves pretty well against an A-list opponent (though X-23 nearly died in the process).

Surge really is a lot like Cyclops. She's a good, maybe even great, leader in the thick of combat, but really just has no clue how to handle the emotional aspects of being a leader.

Oh, and she kissed another guy (Hellion) while she was still dating someone else (Prodigy). The parallels between her and Scott just keep piling up...

No, she deliberately kissed another guy while dating someone else. She kissed Hellion because she was trying to get Prodigy to leave Xavier's, given how dangerous it was getting post M-Day. As such, yes it's a still a bit of a WTF moment, but don't think for a second it was because she remotely liked Hellion, given their history together. It was for a good reason.

And also, she was the best leader for that time. Given the shit that the New X-Men were thrust into, she did a fantastic job. Hellion, on the other hand, or any of the remaining powered students? I couldn't see any of them faring as well.

Hellion probably wouldn't be a good leader now at any rate thanks to his anger over losing his hands.

And hey, Surge is at least a better leader than Hope.
