When the time came, as it inevitably did (and faster than you'd think. The vote to kill Jason was in September 1988, the stories I'm using here started in August 1989) for a new Robin, they sowed the seeds early.

During Batman Year Three in fact )

I first posted this back in my fairly early days on the community, and it is re-posted largely to highlight the pretty Estrada and Giordano art, who draw a damned cute Robin, and a classic Batman and Superman... as well as a very, VERY camp villain, and some rather over-amorous dwarves... I mean, what IS he doing to Robin's leg there?

Quite a few images under the cut. It's a fifteen page story, so I've trimmed it down from it's original posting to what seems to be about five pages in total, but if it seems too large, I'll trim some images out.

...where Superman fights something from Tolkien, Batman finds himself in a Harryhausen flick and Robin is mugged by dwarves! This ones surely has something for everyone! )

As has been discussed briefly before, Jason Todd first appeared in 1984 as another circus kid, but in June 1987 that got wiped away completely in the pages of Batman #408.

Unfortunately, I used up a few pages from Batman #408 in this post about how Dick gave up being Robin in this iteration.

So to balance that out, I'm also going to look at #409 and #410, which expand on Jason 2.0's introduction and training, and also looks to maybe highlight how the kid got a bum rap, especially after he died.

This is essentially, the introduction of Jason Todd to the Batverse, showcasing his introduction to the world of Robin-ness, reveal how pre- Crisis Batman handled so many things differently from his Post-Crisis self, and also highlight the gorgeous, rich artwork of the late, great Don Newton (inked by Alfredo Alcala), one of the most under-appreciated Batman artists ever IMHO.

We have a few major characters celebrating their 80th anniversary this year, and over the course of the year, we'll be celebrating them in turn. The choice of the name "Week of Wonder" is a hint towards who two of those characters are! :)

Since it's the first day of Spring on Friday and; according to one source his birthday, it seems apt to make our first Week of Wonder be about the character who's secondary title was so prevalent, it was in his logo from his debut in 2020

By whom I mean, of course,

Robin the Boy Wonder

who became the Teen Wonder... and eventually the Hunk Wonder (Babs words, not mine).

But times have changed, and whilst Dick Grayson may have been the first, he was by NO means the only Robin,

We have Jason Todd 1 and 2, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Damian Wayne, Carrie Kelley and even the likes of Matt McGinnis and (in the Golden Age) Bruce Wayne himself, and all are fair game for this celebration.

But Dick Grayson hasn't just been Robin, he's also been Nightwing (from Disco-Wing to... (shudder) Ric), Batman, Agent 37 of Spiral and also, of course, Dick Grayson as a character in his own right, described by some as the most well-connected character in the DCU, since his family starts with Batman and his friends start with Superman

So over the next week, let's celebrate the kid who was able to make BATMAN smile, and still kick seven shades of crud out of the bad guys!
