"Perhaps the most compelling character has been the Wall, Amanda Waller. There was no one really like her before in comics; I don't think there's been anyone to match her since. She's a woman, she's black, she has no super-powers, and she is as tough and indomitable as they come. She is also flawed herself. We get more discussion in the letters about Amanda than anything else in this book. Some of you absolutely loathe her. That's all to the good. We never claimed she was a hero, or a role model, or without flaws. Compelling - that she is. If Kim and I have made a contribution to the DC Universe, it's probably Amanda. Watch. She won't stay quiet long. Other people will want to use her. Amanda may be back before the Squad is."
- John Ostrander, circa 1992

I had thought about doing a carefully curated selection of scenes of Amanda to contrast with her current actions in Absolute Power. That seemed like a lot of work, so here's just some of my favourites after a quick flick through the OG Suicide Squad TPBs. This is the woman that will go on to forge an alliance with a Brainiac and an evil Batman robot to rob all super-heroes of their powers, remember...

It turned out that the Loa, the criminal organisation that Amanda Waller fabricated to catch out Captain Boomerang, wasn’t such a fabrication in the first place. The group revealed that Waller was still in charge of the Suicide Squad after seemingly being demoted after the Janus Directive affair and the Squad was forced to disband. However, before that happens, Waller decides it is time to settle matters once and for all.

Issue #7'd had the titular character, the avatar of the Green succeeding Alec Holland, remembering the weight of his past through the Nightmare Nurse's surgery.

She, part of the Suicide Squad deployment that'd been aimed at him, had left him to the chemicals of Chemo after he'd turned down her offer to free him from that weight (and the Green too, in consequence).

She and squad leader Peacemaker watched the Swamp Thing finish off Chemo from far off.

Peacemaker gave the order to wind up their mission. )

The therapist is Nightmare Nurse, a Justice League Dark character who's part of the " capture the Swamp Thing " Suicide Squad mission started in issue #6.

The mission was going all awry - Heat Wave'd seemingly run their target'd down, but then their target'd risen and put Heat Wave out of commission. Parasite was off glutting himself on the strange bounty of the Kazirangan forest they'd lured the Swamp Thing into, and Chemo was just a lumbering blanket effect.

There was Peacemaker, taking full stock of the situation - and the Swamp Thing, the avatar of the totality of plant life that was the Green, on his way to save the forest from the effects of the lure Amanda Waller'd dropped in #5.

As he walked, he thought. )

Issue #4'd ended on the corporate presence hovering around the edges of the story making a call to Amanda Waller.

Issue #5, a story about a bomb, had ended with Waller dropping a bomb on four miles of forest within the Kaziranga National Park.

Her bomb, the device she'd been given by the company of the man who'd called, was intended to lure the Swamp Thing - currently Levi Kamei, the newly chosen avatar of the Green.

The team she sent was intended to take him.

They weren't unfit for the task. )

While WB Montreal is working on Gotham Knights, Rocksteady has officially unveiled their hotly anticipated Suicide Squad game! The premise might not be to everyone's tastes, but as a video game I think that sounds like that could be really cool.
