Between us, it’s been a sharp learning-curve, writing something so Ur-Heroic. Editorial good sense notwithstanding, it would’ve been easy to turn in a quintessentially Me splurge of deconstructivist weirdness and black-hearted sarcasm. I’ve resisted that urge. *cough* Okay, I’ve mostly resisted that urge. -- Si Spurrier

What I’m shooting for here is a shaken cocktail of all the boldness and moral sincerity of classic Justice League, with a few dollops of Deep Scifi exotica thrown in. -- Si Spurrier

If I thought I could get away with it I would’ve called it The Joy Of Sects. -- Si Spurrier

Infinite Crisis was the DC event just before I properly got into reading comics regularly (that was for 52). My local library had all of the tie in trades so I was able to get a flavour of the event.

So I approached Tales from the Dark Multiverse - Infinite Crisis with a lot of curiosity

As with all What If stories, it needs a bit of an understanding of What Was before you get into What Could Have Been

The original... )
The Dark Multiverse version )

Like all what ifs, and Dark Multiverse especially, it squanders the initial premise to give us "and everything was terrible" but this was a good moment

I'm genuinely very fond of this story. The writing is excellent, so is the art, and its ending left me feeling very satisfied. I highly recommend it.

However, it was very difficult to decide which pages to post. Because, while I really loved this story as a whole, I can't really think of any specific individual scenes that really convey its quality. This is one of those stories with a solid premise, solid gradual build-up, and solid conclusion; but all of those parts of the whole don't look nearly as effective when taken on their own.

This is also why I'm not going to post any scans from the very final issue. Though, if you are sure you are not interested in reading the whole thing, I can tell you how it ends in the comments.

I hope you enjoy it :)

Part of my Poison Ivy kick this summer took me to John Layman's Detective Comics. She pops in and out of the Emperor Penguin story, but had more of an impact in the three part Gothtopia that ran in Detective #27-29.

Okay, now THIS is a series I've been looking forward to; Christy Marx, story editor and main writer on Jem, as well as writer of Sisterhood of Steel, taking on a long standing DC license which was criminally underexpoited at the time, and ever since.

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld

NB - I feel I should mention that there is an attempted gang-rape of a character in the first issue. I don't feature scans of it, but it has shown up in the discussion thread already, so I'd rather mention it above the cut than have anyone who might find it triggering come across the discussion unawares.

Does it live up to expectation? )

Not BatFamily related (sorry fellow Steph and Cass fans) solicit news! Also, I can't believe I haven't seen anyone else post this. Anyway, my childhood self is extremely happy, because after twenty-five years, she's finally back!

She's back and written by the creator of Jem and the Holograms! )
