Remember the days when Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco had to completely scrap the plot of the miniseries that would become Avengers Forever and make up a brand new one because the original was similar to premise of the concurrently debuting Mutant X?
Or when Avengers writers had to scrap their original plan for Carol Danvers’ pregnancy because it was similar to a What If coming out around the same time, resulting in a last minute re-write that gave us the offensive Marcus Immortus story?
Good times, good times. And by “good” I mean the opposite of that.
What if this is a stealth crossover and we'll later find out that all three (or more!) incidents are actually linked?
I know, that's asking a lot. But otherwise, it means editorial went "yeah, here's the new thing: relaunching series after a time lapse where someone did something awful but we won't ever actually EXPLAIN it, we'll just keep moving forward."
Oh, wait, Iron Man relaunch is coming up and apparently he's broke and everyone hates him also!
I think it's especially galling in that Peter gets specifically called out by Johnny.
"How DARE you cause a huge crater-making explosion and disappear from the limelight, Peter? I thought you were meant to be the responsible one! You don't catch US running away from our problems like that! Oh wait, got a call on the unstable molecules phone. Yeah, what's up Ben? OH FOR THE LUVVA--"
They're all under attack by the Bad Luck Fairy. Next, Captain America is going to trip, throwing his shield and it bounces all across Times Square, cutting people's heads off and no one is going to come to his birthday party now.
That these stories are being published around the same time is mere happenstance that no one reading the issues in the future, in trades or digitally or whatever, will care about or even notice.
Well, going back to my original point, I don't particularly see two different companies having the same basic story as being that big a deal but people do notice.
It's the endless sequels and remakes that convince most people that the storytellers are out of ideas.
Then you have the more involved audiences who criticize things because they think "every Marvel movie is the same" or "every Marvel Comics event is Civil War" or "that specific director/creator keeps making the same movie/comic" but there are considerably less of those people even though you're more likely to find them in fan communities like this. Sometimes I'm one of them.
Just to be clear, I'm not talking about people noticing at the time. I'm talking about everyone in the future, reading these issues as back issues or old trades. Almost none of them are going to notice the similar original publishing date, and those who do aren't going to think anything more than, "Huh, funny coincidence." Or they know already because it's a piece of trivia they've heard it from another fan or on the internet, but their response to that is likewise "Huh, funny coincidence," not, "Dang, knowing these two old stories came out around the same time is going to lessen my enjoyment."
To tie into an example from another comment I made to this post, I think it's silly that Kurt Busiek and Carlos had to completely scrap their entire original plot for Avengers Forever just because it was similar to Mutant X. Looking back at it decades later, it's a silly concern. I'm sure people would have joked about the similarity at the time, but it would ultimately just be a bit of trivia. Nobody today cares that Avengers Forever was 3 months late, and nobody today would care it resembled Mutant X.
What stings more is that EACH AND EVERYONE of these characters just had some good things befall them. Then something terrible occurs and the world is suddenly against them. Spider-Man especially. Another victory over Mephisto that Peter was completely unaware of, the soul of his best friend freed from Hell, Green Goblin de-sinned, and was hooking back up with MJ. Next issue IT'S ALL TRASH! Nobody wuvs Spidey! And we're not going to tell you why!

Date: 2022-11-21 12:50 am (UTC)So Marvel is really using the same setup across several books independent of each other? They're "The House of Ideas," but only picked one?
Maybe it's like an in-company contest, and whoever does it best gets theirs adapted into a movie in the MCU.

It's not like Marvel put out Iron Man and Doctor Strange (not exactly the same movie but close) in the same year.

Date: 2022-11-22 12:11 am (UTC)Online I've seen similar comments about Deep Impact and Armageddon but I haven't actually seen Deep Impact so I can't comment on that one.
It happens enough that SOME people notice.
But what do I know? I'm just a guy who can't remember which one is The Prestige and which one is The Illusionist. Pretty sure I've seen both.
