Yeah... guess who has a cameo in the recent issue of Shazam....
Long story short:
Mr. Mind and Dr. Sivana enter the Monsterlands, formerly the God Realmss before the original SHAZAM council sealed up all the magic up... in this is prison consisting some of the classic Captain Marvel baddies and some new faces too.
Then they came to one door...

........
...
...
Sigh.
I think Superboy Prime has suffered enough.
He was suppsose to redeem himself in Legion of 3 Worlds... he didn't
Was to find peace in Blackest Night... he didn't. He came back near the end of Teen Titans for some stupid plan and was stuck to the Infinity Wall...
And now here he is.
I know he did things we didn't like, mostly killing fan-favorite characters, and well being the embodiment of dysfunctional fanboys in the world of comics...
But to me. He is pretty much a tragic character...
He started out as a normal kid, but then found himself living up to his namesake and living a life of fantasy... which came to an end when CoIE happened and his home was wiped out of existence, but found peace with Golden Age Superman and Lois, as well as Alexander Luthor...
Then he saw how twisted the world his Earth died for become so corrupted, had himself tempted (Alex showing him the deaths of his parents and girlfriend and telling him they would be saved with his plan), and everything for Infinite Crisis happen, and we all know how that went down.... with LOTS of bodies... (and some weird case with the Speed Force I am sure everyone forgot about) and him loosing what little sanity he had left because he just wanted to be back home with his love ones.. To him, everything in DC was just ink and paper and didn't matter when it came to his reality..
Then Sinestro Corps Wars happened and then (Nothing from Countdown to) Final Crisis followed up... and Prime got his wish... he was back home... everyone knew what he did and see him as a monster
At this point Prime was a 4th Wall breaking angry nerd... mostly because how he felt like he nothing he did was of his own control. Then the ending to Blackest Night in Adventure comics hinted what was his "happy ending"...
Then Teen Titans happened, he showed up because he was sucked through a hole in space time, made clones of the guy he wanted to kill, then got slammed into the Infinity Wall while being given a weak send off to how apathetic he was....
Now this... there is also a solicitation of him for issue #13... and it is what you expect for Prime...

I REALLY want him to find some peace.
When it comes right down to it: Superboy Prime was a innocent youth, overwhelmed by a crazy world... A noble hero who delivered the final blow to the Anti-Monitor, only to become desperate to regain what he has lost...
I do have a head-canon that Anti-Monitor "cursed" both Prime and Kara Zor-El when they beat him, expsoing them to low level anti-matter stuff that makes them not "fit-in" with the rest of the universe/multiverse and have them easily corrupted... would explain why that keeps happening to them...

Date: 2020-02-14 03:42 am (UTC)I still wish my old theory about Nu52 Superman had been right, that it had been Prime put into the center chair and given a chance at redemption. Instead, he'll do the exact same thing he does every time, while insulting the readers.

Date: 2020-02-15 04:26 am (UTC)Also, worth mentioning. Alex Luthor Jr had a chance to redemption in an issue of JLA for like a panel or something, and he was the one who set Prime on this path (in a lost companion issue to Infinite Crisis) and the kid's journey keeps hitting new lows...

(To which the answer to all three is almost certainly "because".)
Was anyone actually asking to have Superboy-Prime back?

So I had to try to insert images the properly... so far, not much luck with my own scans...

Date: 2020-02-15 11:01 am (UTC)Johns seems convinced that the shock value of a Superboy lookalike gone completely bonkers sadistic evil is hugely entertaining on its own, that it doubles as some kind of statement against grimdark stories instead of a primary example of them, and that a stream of angry fanboy talk within the fourth wall is just too funny to interrupt with characterization.
Against the odds, this formula more or less worked in Legion of 3 Worlds (probably because such a crowded story needed a villain of a very simple nature in order to maintain any narrative focus), but every time it looks like SBP might evolve somehow, he crashes against that formula and his personality resets. It's like he's up against another wall of time, except this time the wall is punching him.
