Johns only intermittently seems to know or care what the people buying DC comics want/are asking for. There are glimmers of awareness every now and then, but they quickly sink under the tide of grimdark "the heroes are now villains—isn't that ORIGINAL and KEWL?!?" that new creative teams seem to inevitably create.
