I would really have liked to have been in on those planning meetings:

One year and he boots you out and takes on a new kid. Just make him Robin real fast, then Nightwing, kill him off, put him deep undercover..."

The irony is that DC and especially Dan Didio LOVE Barbara Gordon (Oracle? Not so much). Hence his plannd attempt to bring her back as Batgirl even in the old continuity (that was supposed to be what Oracle: The Cure was about). That has been his goal all along to have Babs=Batgirl (just like the return of Jordan as GL and Kara Zor-El). In retrospect the easy way Cass was dispatched from that position and Stephanie's run as Batgirl were all meant as a mere brief holding pattern before he could arrange Barbara's return as Batgirl (remember the trumpeting in the press releases for the new 52 about the return of the "iconic" Batgirl and, more distastefully, the "one true Batgirl" as if previous ones didn't count?)

The ironic thing is that for all of DC's love of Barbara Gordon - they love "The Killing Joke" (a story that wasn't even about her and which even its writer has repudiated) even more. To the the point that it was the ONLY story (not The Death and Return of Superman, not Batman: Year One, not Crisis on Infinite Earths) that fully remained canon in the new 52. What that says about DC brass I don't know.

I shudder to speculate, either! ;)

If they love Barbara, they have a funny way of showing it. I know they put all their eggs in the Barbara basket, but if you keep The Killing Joke you're not allowing her to get a fresh start. If the killing of Superman can be rebooted away, as well as those other examples, the keeping of TKJ is truly baffling.

I would love to see a reboot with Barbara shedding all that TKJ baggage for good. Introduce another character whose contribution from the beginning is an Oracle-like presence, if you like.

Arrow is doing it with Felicity right now as Overwatch (and put her in a wheelchair, though they're coming up with some comics biotech that's supposed to allow her to walk). Felicity isn't the type to want or be effective in the field. She's happier and more useful at the keyboard.

Barbara should be able to fulfill her role as Batgirl because she's good at it. If eventually DC wants her to grow older and retire to Oracle, fine. I just always hated the Joker's crime forcing her into that role. Though I realize DC doesn't want their characters to age AT ALL, never mind five or ten years. *rolls eyes*

I think 'Doomed' showed 'The Death of Superman' still happened in the New 52.

OK, I was going by info above.

The whole reboot, as many have lamented, was not well-planned.
