WONDER WOMAN REBIRTH #1

Please, it's got to drop everything that DC thinks is making Wonder Woman work now in the New52.

I'd be cool with keeping the mythology and designs from the Azzarello/Chiang run. Origin retcon not withstanding, that run is easily a top 5 of all time.

Brief thoughts:

I continue to be astonished on how insistant DC seems to be making Red Hood happen, considering that the reception for it continues to be lackluster.

Interesting that there isn't a Superman/Batman or Superman/Wonder Woman, but rather Trinity. I actually think it is a really great idea that they should have gone with ages ago.

Gotham Academy is coming back? I am overjoyed.

Based on the editorial, I would bet money that for them honoring the legacy is remembering the Silver Age. So I would be greatly surprised if they included anything from the 90s Aquaman in the Rebirth despite it being one of the most critically acclaimed versions of the character.

Superwoman seems... quirky?

Also, I love that it isn't Green Lantern Corps Rebirth, but Hal Jordan and Green Lantern Corps Rebirth.

The Red Hood thing is my first thoughts as well. Somebody (or maybe several somebodies) REALLY love Jason Todd over at DC. Why? I'm not sure. He has been given so many looks/motivations/personality traits since Winick revived him while other characters with more proven track records and vocal fanbases got sidetracked or propelled into limbo.

I think the core Red Hood concept is too good for DC to easily walk away from. I mean, "Robin grows up to be the DCU Punisher" is an instant hook, the problem is that just they haven't yet managed to put out a book which embraces and lives up to that.

Because "He's like Batman, but he kills people." I guess. I really don't see it myself, but as you say, someone feels that's enough of a hook for some reason.

Suggested Lineups (using current pool):

Batman: Tom King/Tim Seeley/Mikel Janin
Wonder Woman: Bryan Q Miller/Bruno Redondo
Superman: Max Landis? Maybe Greg Pak, with a "no event arcs" clause. Tom Taylor, if only to see what he can do with a non-lethal Superman. Wow, this was tougher than I thought
RHATO: Amanda Conner/Jimmy Palmiotti
Harley Quinn: Duh

Unsure for everything else on the 'serious' block; the 'lighthearted's retain creative teams. I hope editorial manages to slot up the right people in the right books: that's like part of their job, I think.

Also, Gotham Academy: Next Semester is a wicked title.

So several years into the DCnU and now "Rebirth" (is this a phrase like Crisis that DC just loves or what?) and we still have no Shazam Ongoing (a franchise we are told repeatedly by Diane Nelson and Geoff Johns that WB brass have long had a particular interest in).
What was the point of giving them a Justice League back-up and re-introducing the concept of the "Marvel Family" and making idealistic Billy Batson into delinquent Billy Bratson (so the Marvels would fit in more with the "ethos", to paraphrase Didio, of the dark grim DCU) if you were going to do absolutely nothing with them after that (except to make Billy still treated as a chump in JL and also in InJustice.

Also? I see Action and Detective are going back to their proper numbering. Didn't Didio/Lee say this would NEVER happen to prove the new "52" was the real deal?

I think that Shazam suffered from the protracted origin (another one), though I think it's worth noting that Billy at the end of it is not the Billy from the start, and he's become the more optimistic kid he had been before life ground him down.

I totaly agree that the Shazam franchise being overlooked so much is baffling.

This really does feel to me like DC finally realized that the New 52 wasn't the success it should have been and that they botched the job horribly.

I am intrigued, but so much of what I pick up will rely on storylines and creative teams. They burned me pretty badly with the mishandling of the New 52, and as a result, DC's output is a pretty small part of my much-diminished monthly comic budget. Biweekly comics is a nice enough idea, but not when that means 1 title represents -2- comics I have to budget for. Same reason I don't get any of their weeklies.

There's so much here I'm interested in, or have high hopes for... but can they pull it off?

I'm especially amused at the renumbering of Action and Detective.

Hmm. I'm cautiously intrigued by this. I gave the New 52 a shot (despite missing the old school DC that I grew up with) and I didn't hate it overall. It had its hits and misses. Some of the titles look interesting, but I'm really more concerned with the creative teams. That's where I'll be deciding which books to pick up.

Not sure how I feel about almost everything going back to #1. That gets pretty annoying after a while (especially when you've got Marvel doing the same thing). But glad to see they're reverting back to the original numbering for Action and Detective Comics though! That I'm definitely down with.

With what looks like the cancellation of the last regular DC title I was reading, Justice League 3001, DC is determined to prove my theory that they don't want me reading any of their titles.

Blue Beetle again! It's going to tank in 12 issues or less without a superstar creative team, and can't possibly live up to the Giffen/Rogers run, but I have missed Jaime.

Mixed feelings on this, though of course it's all just speculation until we know the creative teams, and apparently DC is holding that info back until March, because they want another round of publicity.

Focusing on core titles could be good, IMO the failure of DCYou wasn't due to the new ideas, but that the titles were low profile books (Doctor Fate =/= Superman if you get my meaning), so applying that energy to bigger characters could work much better, and putting out books to actually capitalize on the movies and TV shows is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, DC's been pretty bad at bringing in the new talent in recent years, and the stated focus on so-called core readers has me worried that we'll see the line in the hands of the same aging white dudes we've had for the past few years. There are also a bunch of titles (The Super-Man, Batman Beyond, Earth 2, Super Sons, Superwoman) which I have frankly trouble seeing last out the first year.

On top of that it seems that the diversity of the DCU has taken quite a hit, though we can hold out hope that some of those characters will show up in other books.

As it stands for me personally, it looks like my whole DC pull list is about to get changed. 3 out of the 4 DC titles I'll be reading in May will be cancelled outright, and I'll probably drop Batgirl if it gets retooled. I'm sure something will catch my eye as the creative teams are announced, but right now I'm none too pleased.

At least they're continuing Gotham Academy. And, while I know she's something of a fan pick, I really hope Simone isn't anywhere near Batgirl or BOP's relaunch. They tried her on both books, it didn't work.

Detective and Action Comics going back to their old numbering is flagrantly lining up for the thousandth issues, though. There's no other reason.

The problem with Gail on both Batgirl and BoP in the new continuity is, I think, that she had a clear idea of who these characters are from the old version (that many miss) and that is no longer true in the eyes of DC Editorial. Barbara is no longer Oracle and never was, and Black Canary is for all intents and purposes Black Canary in name only when compared to her origin and backstory from the old DCU.

I liked the New 52, it had some interesting reads and I didn't hate it. But I'm a bit confused about Rebirth. Is it another universe retcon or something?

We don't know. They swear it's not a reboot (universe retcon), but comic companies are... not exactly trustworthy.

Apparently it will at least be a relaunch with hints of "big changes" so they might aim for something like Marvel's Secret Wars and All-New, All-Different thingy. Except that was the opposite on the reboot front (And now we reboot... nah, we actually won't.)

So Grayson is coming to an end to have Dick return to being Nightwing... interesting, and perhaps inevitable, but I have to say Grayson has been one of the titles I've most looked forward to in a long time. I bope Seeley, King and Janin are on board for it.

Love going back to the original numbering for Action and Detective Comics!

DC, some free advice: just admit that the Nu52 was a disaster and do a hard reboot. That means starting right from the beginning if you want to draw in those new readers: Dick as Robin, Barbara as Batgirl (not as Steph-Lite), and so on. I got a newsflash for ya: the general public thinks of Dick as Robin and Babs as Batgirl, and doesn't give a flying fig for any of the characters who came after them. If you want to draw in the new readers, start with a REAL reboot and develop your characters that way, eventually bringing in your legacy characters. Jettison stuff like The Killing Joke and cramming so many Robins into a 5-year timeline. Didn't work!

Exactly. They should have started from scratch (which is basically what they did with characters like WW or Superman who are very different now), but they had to keep the entire Green Lantern mythos Johns set up, and all four male look-a-like Robins (Cass and Steph not so much) even though that made no sense new timeline wise (where Bruce and everybody else is that much younger) and of course they HAD to keep The Killing Joke (of all stories only that one remained canon) even though this version of Barbara Gordon is barely into her 20s (no longer retired) and behaves more like Miller's Stephanie Brown than any idea of the "iconic" Batgirl Didio talks about.
