Still no words yet. Beware, on Tumbler/4chan someone shoped some in for one page. Got a bunch of people fooled, but it's an MS paint edit.

And as a bonus, the preview sketch book pages in clearer form:

If you look int he background, in thinner line, you can see designs for some of the newer characters. It looks like two suited characters are covered up in one image, and then there's the winged girl and an older person who is a true unknown in this thing.
The presense of possible 3 characters in suits makes it likely only one will make it out of this thing to keep from having too many characters who look similarly. It also suggests that the one in the red suit on this cover:

May be Cammi, with the third appearing on #3's variant (below).
And the Solicits:
AVENGERS ARENA #2
DENNIS HOPELESS (W) • KEV WALKER (A)
Cover by CHRIS BACHALO
Variant cover by MIKE OEMING
• ANNIHILATION’s Cammi vs. Deathlocket!
• AVENGER ACADEMY’s Hazmat vs. Deathlocket!
• Who the heck is Deathlocket? And who dies in this issue?
• Plus: Who are the students of the Braddock Academy?
32 PGS./Rated T …$2.99

AVENGERS ARENA #3
DENNIS HOPELESS (W) • KEV WALKER (A)
Cover by GREG HORN
Variant Cover by GARRY BROWN
• X-23 vs. ANNIHILATION’s Cammi!
• A mystery opponent vs. AVENGERS ACADEMY’s Sentinel!
• Who is the killer stalking the competitors in their sleep?
• Plus: Darkhawk equals death!
32 PGS/Rated T ... $2.99
The art cetrainly is beautiful, in its horrific way and a lot more 'even' than the foggy images lead us to believe. We now know X-23 and Cammi survive #2. To me, the only way it can go and work is to have the new one, Deathlocket, die as it is her issue. Hazmat, sadly, looks to be grievously wounded during the whole thing (the last page of #1 perhaps). But her death here would be utterly unearned.
A poster on 4chan put it best in response to the Deathlocket vs. Hazmat alternate cover of #1.
And at least they targeted less high profile characters (I loved those kids too, but overall it worked better than where this appears to be going).
Of course, it could also be an unmentioned third party to catch us completely off guard. I think that would be the lesser of the narrative options available. Who knows. I still pray for cop outs and resurrections.
And that Arcade dies at the end of this. To me, he's crossing the moral event horizon as a character and his escape would undermine the story (even more than the logical faults in its set up do already).
But overall, horror overtaking heroics is clearly one of the biggest problems in this proposed series on a conceptual level (and believe me, there are others).

Date: 2012-10-19 11:20 pm (UTC)Not sure X-23 should really be able to take Hazmat that easily, it looks like she's inherited her daddy's popularity power.
Issue 3 cover, is that a generic Sentinel or is it one that's controlled by a kid?
Kind of excited to see Darkhawk at least. I think he's got a neat look.

Date: 2012-10-19 11:25 pm (UTC)The art is real nice here, that variant cover is meh, and since I'm not too invested in these characters, lets just see where this goes.
Interesting that they have her crying, it comes off as really powerful, normally heroes in these comics never seem to shed tears when they should.

Date: 2012-10-19 11:34 pm (UTC)That only one real character of note (IE: a larger supporting appearance vs minor supporting appearances) died as a result of the bus also helps.
The later deaths, however, were not as well handled, IMO.

Hopeless has already made his intent clear, and I'm sure you'd be reacting the way some of us are if they took a bunch of your favourite characters, slapped them in a book together, and then proceeded to say 'these kids are going to die to show a shitty one-note bad guy means business'.

Date: 2012-10-19 11:36 pm (UTC)Hopeless was asked this at NYCC: (from Comics Alliance)
"When asked why Darkhawk is in Avengers Arena when he isn't a kid, Hopeless said it would be addressed, while Hickman joked that Darkhawk is "a bit of a pedophile."
Classy, right?

Date: 2012-10-20 03:25 am (UTC)He was Chief of Security at Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S., he spent some time in the Negative Zone, hung out with Nova a lot, and then there was this thing where another Darkhawk kinda kicked him out of his own body and for a while he was possessed by another consciousness from within the armor. That other consciousness killed Lilandra of the Shi'Ar.
So Darkhawk was kinda public enemy number one in Space for a while.

Date: 2012-10-20 01:11 am (UTC)It looks like they're going to kill Hazmat to give Mettle some RAGE! In fact, it'll be a twofer since it'll also give X-23 more angst.

Date: 2012-10-20 01:36 am (UTC)Hazmat or Mettle's death would be incredible cheap, however, regardless of how its done, mostly because the arc that follows would be predictable and dull.

Date: 2012-10-20 02:21 am (UTC)During the Cold War, there were teenagers who truly believed they would never live to turn 18.
In ghettos, there are teenagers who truly believe they won't live to turn 18.
The intended teenage audience for this neither lives in the Cold War or in a ghetto. Why the absolute nihilism, as opposed to the somewhat more tepid nihilism of adolescence? Are vampires and zombies no longer enough?

Date: 2012-10-20 02:43 am (UTC)But seriously, Marvel's hoping the controversy equals sales, and sadly it probably will.
My understanding is Avengers Academy sold "OK but not great" so quite frankly from Marvel's point of view pretty much all of them not named X-23 are expendable if they're not being used in another book.
Oh, and if Hazmat dies, so will Mettle, and X-23 will probably kill an Arcade-bot at the end (since supposedly the whole point of the series is to boost Arcade's profile as a villain...assuming that's true, it defeats the purpose to kill him at the end).

Date: 2012-10-21 02:24 am (UTC)Marvel, I didn't know you hated kids and teens that weren't Loki and half of the Young Avengers.
Still, I wonder why Laura's on a rampage, and I want Hazmat to get through this alive and kicking.
no subject
Date: 2012-10-21 02:46 am (UTC)I also want Hazmat and Mettle to make it out of this alive and kicking.
And While I'm wanting things, I want this to be rendered moot either as an AU, a simulation or otherwise letting the kids live.
