But defeats the whole point of Billy Batson, he's supposed to be the good hearted kid who came through the system without becoming a punk, and DESPITE it being an unpleasant experience.
Also Sivana being SUCH a Luthor clone looks-wise does neither party any favours.
hmmm can't say i like the 'Tude, Billy has, it's understandable, and more inline with what i feel a kid in the foster system WOULD be...that said (i lfeel like i am saying that alot) being a punk kid on the exterior does not mean that's what he is on the interior
hmmm you k now what... you have a point there... Harry was in no way naive, but he wasn't a punk. oh he was no angel, and would talk back, but usually when he did it was called for...
still, it is intruiging... i dont hate it yet, but i am cautious, he is behaving more like a kid in the foster system would.., which is something that really bothered me before hand.. he was too naive... but harry potter is a good example of a orphan in bad straights who turned out good.
it maybe that he puts on this act in order to survive...? but its not his true personality...
Wow. Making Billy a dick. I was going to pick this up, but that's super not happening now.
Seriously. Billy is nice. Sweet. A good kid. There are origin stories that keep him a nice boy while showing that he isn't naive. (First Thunder, for example.) He can be street smart without being a smarmy ass. This feels just wrong.
Also, Sivana has apparently been taking his Lex Luthor pills.
I get the impression that the other kids the Vasquez folks are referring to are the Flashpoint gang, and that ultimately Billy won't be the sole Shazamite (mayhap it'll prove that Black Adam was 'bad' because one person couldn't handle the power), so Billy's characterization won't be all that important other than as a POV character. I hate losing Mary and Junior, but we'll get diversity in the donor bodies, while the actual superhero will be a vaguely caucasian male, so it's a win-win saleswise.
Interesting notion on the Vasquez's fostering the Flashpoint kids. Not sure that "gender and ethnically diverse group become white guy" would be the way to go (And a little reminiscent of the Forever People becoming Infinity Man)
Perhaps Shazam is a shared power and any one of them can become Shazam, with Billy being the preferred host, but the others having their own take on the power as the need arises, becoming a new sort of Mary and Jr etc etc...
I work in adoptions. That whole situation is so completely whacked out and nonsensical it's silly. "Draw up the papers?" It's not like picking out a puppy and you take him home the next day.
I can understand concerns about Billy being turned into yet another jerkass, but I can kind of get the approach that Johns is going with here. Being in the foster system is no picnic (I'm speaking from experience here), and who knows, Billy might end up getting something from the experience of turning into a new person that takes off some of his rough edges.
I'm also liking Gary Frank's art better here than some of the other work he's done; speaking of taking off the edges, whomever's inking him is putting something there that reminds me favorably of the recently-departed John Severin.
Yeah, I'm with you. It's not exactly what I would have liked, but I have a feeling that this is mostly a rough exterior for Billy. And it's not like the head of the Orphanage seems like a peach herself.
I assume Billy's had a really rough life, so a little cynicism and jerkiness at first doesn't bother me much. I'm excited to see where it goes.
Personally I think the "holy moly" Billy Batson only works in his own universe. This is still only the first issue, he might start acting nicer when Mary is introduced.
Which is why I'd have LEFT him in his own universe.
All this talk about "Magic is key to Shazam", it's really not. It's what triggers the change, but traditionally, Billy's alter ega was a standard superhuman, the fact that the change was triggered by magic rather than vita-rays or something was more or less incidental. Yes he fought "The Seven Deadly Sins" and even Satan on occasion, but so do many superbeings.
Depends on the iteration, normally, not really. He's actually a kid who's having a tougher life (ongoing) than Billy. His grandfather was killed by Captain Nazi, and he was left partially disabled as a result, and had to run an open air newspaper stand in all weathers to earn a living.
Unwise relaunch nobody wanted or asked for, poor business decision. Also, Billy Batsons personality is a central character concept, as it's part of the reason the Wizard/Destiny/The Force chooses him to inherit Shazaam's power, he won't turn into another Black Adam.
While I have always been a fan of the frail but dangerous Dr. Sivana, I kind of like his new design and obsession over the power of Shazam. I think it makes him into an evil version of Clarence Charles Batson from the Ordway stories.

His characterization and popualarity in Young Justice PROVES that a "boy scout" Billy can be profitable.
I just hope Mary isn't a "bad girl" or other ilk. Jesus just give them to me to write I'd write them all really well.
