In my last post, I asked if anyone was interested in seeing more stories from Batgirl: The Greatest Stories Ever Told. Someone asked for The Orchid Crusher, which happens to be the next story in the book after Barbara's debut. The next two, actually. It seems to have been a two-part backup story in Detective Comics in early 1970. Part Two is entitled "The Hollow Man."

Other stories in the book )

As before, all scans are available on flickr if you want to take a closer look at anything.

Good superheroes just can't get a break. Literally; when's the last time a superhero went on a vacation, a family outing or a honeymoon that didn't involve an alien invasion, supervillain plot, the kidnapping of a friend/partner, a terrorist attack and so on?

To illustrate, I show you the 1998 crossover Three of a Kind, published in three parts in Green Lantern #96, Green Arrow #130 and Flash #134 and written by Ron Marz, Chuck Dixon and Grant Morrison respectively.

Maybe they should just have gone by teleporter )

Here's a thing I've been meaning to do for a while.

Back during the Elegy arc of Detective Comics, there was a two-page spread of Kate, under the effect of Alice's narcotic whatsis, flashing back on significant events in her life to that point.

If nothing else, it's quite pretty. )

What a lot of people missed -- myself included, the first time I read this -- was that Rucka and Williams buried a bunch of Significant Words in the lines of the image. )

The best Elseworlds stories utilize the alternate reality format to gain fresh perspective on the characters and themes they represent. I've always loved the mantra which used to accompany the earliest books in this imprint:

"In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places--some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn't, or shouldn't exist. The result is stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow."

I've always loved that last line. "As familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow." So why are there so many mediocre Elseworlds stories? Why do so many follow the formula of "plug in X character in Y time setting, tell basically the same origin"? Asking "What If?" doesn't really matter if that question isn't followed by, "So What?"

That is not the case with Alan Brennert's last (and only) major DC story, Batman: Holy Terror, the first alternate universe DC story to carry the Elseworlds brand. It's that rare Elseworlds (hell, that rare story) which actually has something to say about its lead character and the alternate reality he inhabits.

In this instance, it's Batman in a Puritanical theocracy.

Here are two pages from "Incredible Hulks" #621 by Greg Pak and one of my favorite artists - Paul Pelletier! Though I like him better on a cosmic book! Wish he was doing Annihilators!

Looks like this issue is supposed to be read after "Chaos War" #5 as there are spoilers.

Oracle once wondered if the Bat-family was culpable for the Joker's crimes since they never did anything permanent to stop him. Here's a few pages from the NEW AVENGERS: ILLUMINATI special where a similar discussion about culpability is discussed.
