CAPTAIN AMERICA #183: Post-Secret Empire
Jan. 26th, 2017 01:31 amstarwolf_oakleyFor some reason, seeing pages of CIVIL WAR II: THE OATH and hearing about the upcoming SECRET EMPIRE story got me thinking about the first Nomad Story. Specifically a part of the end.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #183 took place while Steve Rogers was the Nomad. (He was depressed that Number One of the Secret Empire turned out to be a high-ranking White House official who might have been Richard Nixon, who knows?)

lego_joker... let's have a look at the day that Dick Grayson graduated from high school after being held back for thirty years. And the historical implications for the Bat-comics surrounding it as a whole.
For different heroes (and their respective supporting casts) in the DC Universe, the exact moment of transition from "Golden Age" to "Silver Age" varied from "clear as day" - such as in the case of the Flash and Green Lantern, who had entirely new people take over the titles - to "muddled, vague, endlessly-debated mess" - as was the case with Superman and Batman.
The transition from "Silver Age" to "Bronze Age" was just as messy for many heroes, if not moreso. After all, unlike the jump from Golden to Silver, the jump from Silver to Bronze saw no retcon saying "Oh, all the comics published during [insert time period here] took place on this Earth, while the ones you're reading right now take place on this Earth!". A portion of comics fans and/or scholars today even deny the very existence of a "Bronze Age", choosing to lump all of the output from the 1970s to the mid-1980s (a rough approximation, mind you) into the Silver Age.
Still, there were definite changes in tone, art style, and story elements in most of DC's publications once the 1970s rolled around. Clark Kent, for one, became a TV News Anchor, while Oliver Queen picked up his (in)famous rough-edged personality and left-wing ideals (as well as his fabulous goatee).
For me, though, the clearest line in the sand - at least where DC's major heroes were concerned - was the one drawn in the Batman books.

No Gorilla on the Cover, But Just Wait...
Jan. 27th, 2012 12:17 amskjamOne of the most frequently reused plots of the Silver Age Superfamily titles was "supporting cast character temporarily gains superpowers, causing problems for the hero." Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane were the most common targets of this, but everyone got into the act, including some long-forgotten characters like the one we'll look at today.

hatmanIn my last post, I asked if anyone was interested in seeing more stories from Batgirl: The Greatest Stories Ever Told. Someone asked for The Orchid Crusher, which happens to be the next story in the book after Barbara's debut. The next two, actually. It seems to have been a two-part backup story in Detective Comics in early 1970. Part Two is entitled "The Hollow Man."

As ever, a six page story is a nightmare to trim and still leave interesting, but I can thoroughly recommend this story, it's reprinted in "The Greatest Batman Stories ever Told"
Millionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne has taken three "ghetto hardened kids" on a camping trip so they can get their first experience in the wide open, smog-free, star bedappled sky, spaces, and local wildlife. )Okay, get your minds out of the gutter RIGHT NOW! This is NOT going to be one of those posts.. it's a nice, fun story, and we'll have NO lowering of the tone, RIGHT?)
As the kids and Mr Wayne sit round the campfire, one of them is startled by the hooting of an owl, something he's never heard before. He is mocked by his friends.

It's one of those covers that I'm sure just LEAPT off of the gets endlessly repeated by those with delightfully prurient minds.. in other words the entire membership of scans_daily!
But what goes on inside this testament tothe perils of dabbling with autoerotic asphyxiation horror and fear? This masterclass in "Sidekick in peril"-dom? Now the story can be told... well, selected chunks of it. (I think this totals out at around 7 pages from a 23 page story.)
It's one of those covers that I'm sure just LEAPT off of the gets endlessly repeated by those with delightfully prurient minds.. in other words the entire membership of scans_daily!
