The Resistance #1

"A global disaster leaves hundreds of millions dead in its wake. Shortly after, a few thousand suddenly manifest superhuman powers. Are they harbingers of more perils to come...or Earth's last hope?"

That first image of the globe at night, with what looks like a metroplex to rival NYC or Moscow along the south shore of James Bay, is far more interesting to me than the rest of the story. In our world you can't even drive there from points south by road.

First, I'll cut some slack as obviously they had no idea of the timing of all this.

Second, not a bad concept but too much "been there, done that" from pandemic and "world falling apart" to "President leads country to tyranny" to "mass empowerment event" and just feels too old-hat.

The pandemic connection and "what if Trump but smart" are the only things that make this exercise interesting. JMS's issue here is that he's still thinking like the superhero genre needs to justify its existence to the new reader, when even movies have mostly moved past spending a lot of time on the origins. A film like Doctor Strange or Aquaman focuses on the title character's emotional journey, but they don't spend pages and pages going "What if... and stay with me here... REGULAR PEOPLE suddenly got SUPER-POWERS? [Fozzie Bear:] Ahhh? AHHHHH?" They're just like "Hey, turns out magic and merpeople exist, deal with it."

I liked this story better when David Palmer first told it with "Emergence", back in the '80s.

I am not a fan of the tracing photos trend I see more and more.
