"This ain't company hype. I read this comic last week and I had to read the second part twice to make sure it really was as good as I thought it was." - Brian Michael Bendis
I find it interesting that both this and Justice League are endeavoring to tell different "untold" aspects of J'onn's origins. I'm not yet sure how compatible they are.
This also the, what, fourth or fifth retcon to J'onn's origins just since 2011 alone (His changed history in Stormwatch, in Justice League of America (twice, I think. The back-up was inconsistent with the memory hole ones), his solo book before this, now this and JL)? Why is giving him a consistent backstory so difficult?
Because sometimes, a lot of the time, "X needs a backstory fix!" is a trap that gets writers thinking about 'how would I do the backstory...?' and they stay stuck there because none of them hit it big enough to become *the* backstory... which is because they aren't allowed to spend a lot of time digging in and gaining traction..
See how people tried to retcon Hawkman's backstory even after Geoff Johns fixed it. Or Donna Troy's... everything. Wonder Woman herself to an extent.
Yeah, the nature of comics these days means you're not going to be guiding a character for years (on average. You still get the occasional thing like Slott on Spider-Man or Aaaron on Thor), so trying to make major changes inevitably leads to the next guy going "nope!"
Especially since J'onn's 80's origin works pretty much perfectly (with only minimal refinements by Ostrander and Mandrake). Lone survivor of a plague, teleported across time and space, found a new family in a world of emerging heroes.
I remember there was one that seemed to have an interesting thing with multiple aspects of him, but then I looked away and when I look back it's gone I guess?
