Eh... not crazy about them using a classic DC villain as an Elliot Rodger afterschool special, and having him as a 'normal' kid already wielding a death-umbrella is kind of silly.
But I suppose if there's any character who would throw a tantrum like this, it's Oswald. At least since stuff like 'Pain and Prejudice' and the Joker's Asylum one-shot. Although even then he would have done something like cut the brakes off the guy's car as opposed to pulling out a semi-automatic umbrella and blasting the guy on the spot.
No he did not. That did not happen. To me it's like that story where Harley set off all those bombs disguised as toys. Regardless of what's on the pages my head-canon refuses to accept it, and as far as I'm concerned it it didn't happen. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I really wish writers stopped turning to the lowest common denominator when they try to make a character "deeper" or whatever. 90% of the time, they just make the character a racist or a Nice Guy(TM), and it completely drains out my interest in them.
Yes, I know, "these are villains!" But comics are supposed to be entertainment, and there is nothing entertaining about crappy character traits that you have to deal with all the time in RL. I like villains in my entertainment to be over-the-top dastardly greater-than-life figures, not the creep I try to avoid when I take a stroll.
Yep. And the thing is Gotham even explored Penguin in a similar fashion (he was in love with Riddler and had his girlfriend killed) but in a way that made sense for the character without hamfisted social commentary.
TBH, I really wish they'd take a page from the Golden Age and make it so the Penguin doesn't have an origin at all. He's one of those characters that just becomes more pathetic the more you try to explain him, because those explanations are inevitably about how he tried to play by society's rules and failed miserably, then became a criminal and... kept failing miserably, to the point where even Batman doesn't take him seriously except as a stoolie.
Yeah. 'Penguin: Pain and Prejudice' had him knocking off people as a kid but it was more understated stuff like 'pouring hot water over the ice where someone goes to ice-skate, leading them to fall in and drown'.
To be fair, that part is kind of in-line with what John Ostrander did with him in the '90s. Except there, his first "trick" umbrella just had a sharpened ferrule that cut a kid's cheek apart.
I'm ugly? Ok, I'll be a criminal. You know, I never realised how Penguin, Two Face and Joker are alike. The difference being Oswald looking like a penguin all his life, so he had time to get used to it. That's probably why Oswald is a criminal genius, while the other two are batshit crazy
