I... never thought I'd see a Deadpool that made Gerry Duggan look subtle and complex, but this new series really needs to dial it back a notch. The whole issue reads like "HI I'M TRYING TO BE FUNNY, HERE ARE JOKES AND SWEARS. AM I FUNNY YET TRAGIC YET HILARIOUSLY OFFENSIVE WHILE BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL? DO YOU LOVE ME YET? I'M DEADPOOL!"
It could be good, if Skottie Young learned just a shade of restraint and better comedic timing, and to let the jokes sell themselves rather than have Deadpool all but literally nudge us going "That was a joke!"
I love how the Deadpool movie used Negasonic Teenage Warhead solely because they liked her name and Marvel responds by resurrecting and completely rebooting the character to make her like the movie.
Not complaining as I liked her a lot in the Deadpool films but y'know... Marvel.
"Let's use Colossus and Cannonball!" "Colossus, sure. Cannonball... Eh, characters that fly are expensive." "All right, we'll just use a character with a cool name and give her powers that are like Cannonball's only she can't fly." "Brilliant!"
I think they've admitted their approach is they have a book of mutant names and powers they can use and they go through and pick ones that sound cool.
Unfortunately I don't think there's any 'brain trust' for consistency so we have stuff like two Calibans in Apocalypse and Logan and a version of Yukio showing up in Wolverine before a different one appeared in Deadpool.
The latter I suppose you could just handwave and say Yukio is a common name but with Caliban you have two bald mutants whose powers are finding other mutants but one has normal skin and refers to himself in the third person and the other is albino and speaks normally with a British accent.
Deadpool really seems to only have two settings. There’s either “I’m a terrible person who does terrible things” or “I’m trying to do good and be a better person but it’s hard because my instincts tell me to be terrible.”
The last run and the movies have comfortably been the latter. This seems to be the former.
