Was the idea of her being the Goddess of War really such a horrible idea, Rucka?

I will admit, I am a bit worried after this start as it kind of seems to revert Diana back to what she was before, whereas I did actually think that Azzarello did understand that Diana needed a better defined role and a dilemma than 'Man, she is just great at everything.'

Azzarello's rewrite of Wonder Woman was a bit more drastic than that.

Having her mentor be Ares, while the Amazons are brutes? It would be like Superman being raised by Metallo. Or Batman having to kill his evil parents. Or Captain America being a Nazi for real.

It was a giant raised middle finger to the fandom and the original creators, more than the present controversial Steve Rogers story, and it went on for years.

I have very big problems with the Rucka run. I don't know if he's the right choice to fix it. But it has been calling out for a fix-it for four years.

The idea itself may not necessarily have been horrible.

But when the execution involves turning all the female figures in her life into rapists and murderers, and having her only ever able to find logic and understanding in men, and claiming that "if there were no war, evil people would enslave everybody!!! (Somehow. Apparently the violence used to terrorize, attack, capture and hold people on a mass scale doesn't count as war)"... Well, sorry, I vote for reverting Diana back to what she was before.

Oh. I think the goddess off war could be an interesting idea. I mean Diana as athena's heir? The amazons who love her unsure of how they feel about Diana representing war when their way is peace? That would be something really interesting.
And Azarrello completely failed to do anything of that, instead making a story about women being demonized and men being put on a pedestal.

Yeah, I can see why people were aggrieved by the changes Azzarello introduced and I wouldn't say they were all for the better, but the thing about Wonder Woman and the Amazons (for me at least) is that too many times they border on "their major problem is that they're too perfect". I think there needs to be some kind of friction or tension from somewhere at least.

It does fairly strongly go against both her origin- where the creator specifically wanted her to not have swords because she was there to subdue, not injure- and her whole mission of peace thing. Rucka himself had her as a diplomat in his run.

It clashes with her themes. It's something that on the surface that looks interesting, but... it's ultimately taking away from what made her Wonder Woman, which is not just a god-related hero with a lasso and amazon ties.

I love Rucka and am incredibly glad to see him back at DC on his terms, where he can tell them to go fuck themselves if they start screwing around again. But.. I'm not sure I like this idea of 'everything was lies, THIS is the truth'. And this isn't just being applied to the Azz/Chiang run, despite the glee of the miserable internet crowd, it's *everything* that's being called into question.

So long as it actually does the job of unmuddying things rather than outright shitting all over stuff, though, that should be fine, but I've seen tons of lesser writers than Rucka screw this kind of thing up.

I do generally agree in principle. Building on what came before is almost always better than erasing that almost.

But.... "the bulk of the supporting cast and the hero's home culture is rapists," does fit in that 'almost' I think. There's not really a good way to go forward with that while using the amazons, not that I can think of.

For those who have read most of the Rebirths...is Rucka's WW:Rebirth the biggest "take that" (to put it nicely) to the "new 52" or are there other writers who were stronger in disassociating themselves with the DCnU? Because despite Rucka's quote that he's trying to reconcile ALL the "inconsistencies" in her "75 year history" this sure as heck seems aimed at the "new 52" version.

Not that I'm complaining. I actually hoped for something like this when GR was announced back on the title.

Hmm, a jab at Wondy's endless re-imaginings over the decades since Marston died, I see, with the biggest pointed at the awful Nu52. If they retcon those rapist Amazon murderers, I'm all for it! Also, dump Zeus as her father and make Paradise actually Paradise again. Leaving Themyscira should be a sacrifice for her, not a relief.

Steve's a sailor now? Or is that a different guy who washed up on the shore?

I like the symbolism of Diana shedding all the silver and putting on the gold, suggesting we'll see her pre-Nu52 self in some form.

I'll be interested in seeing how this goes, because her origin was the worst of the Reboot, even though I wasn't crazy about Clark losing his parents and being all alone and Bruce with the Robin assembly line.

Here's a groundbreaking notion, DC: don't mess up your core universe and stick with it for at least a generation. Other versions can be Elseworlds, which is what those are for! Quit rebooting every time we readers turn around!

I liked Azzarello's run a lot. On the other hand, that story ended with issue #36, and I don't feel like it necessarily needs to be continued.

I'm fine with retooling Diana's origins again as long as there isn't too much focus on it. I read comics for the characters and the stories they can tell, not so I can see writers spend six issues continuity wanking.

Retcon the book. About what I expected, I know a lot of people are gonna love the Azzarello run being retconned but that's the only time I found Diana's little corner of the DCU actually interesting so Greg "mehtastic" Rucka retconning that doesn't jive with me at all.
