Dan Greenfield: When was the last time you actually went back and re-read the old Kirby issues? Has it been a long time or…?

Neal Adams: I’ve picked ’em up now and then, you know? I’ve got ‘em lying around the house. But I can’t do that stuff because everybody’s chomped through it, you know? I had to jump forward in time but I used the same characters. I’m not putting new costumes on ’em. They’re wearing the same costumes Jack Kirby had. Maybe the drawing is a little bit better because I’m a better artist than Jack Kirby was.

I think it's pretty obvious what is happening... the ancient egyptians visited New Genesi and Apokolips and gave them the secret of space travel as well as their technology.

Sooooo, is this going to be the Superman equivalent of Batman: Odyssey?

Did Neal Adams just say that he was a better artist then Kirby?

is it Riot O'Clock yet? I've got torches and pitchforks if someone else has the wooden frankenstein rake thingies...

No, that's fair. He is Neal Adams.

I mean it's a matter of opinion, but it comes across as incredibly self important and unprofessional. Unless he was joking or something?

Well, to be fair---Jack's faces were stylized to the point if the character had the same hair color and hair style, it was hard to tell them apart. It was hard to tell apart, say, Kirby's Silver Age Steve Rogers, Hank Pym, or even Don Blake in his later drawings, when he wasn't so thin--one had to look for the cane and the medical coat in the latter to tell them apart. Neal did take faces and details in comic art up a notch. One WOULDN'T mistake Bruce Wane's face and hair for Superman's face and hair, for instance.

Of course, the trend has continued since then. It's hard to recognize how revolutionary Adams' art was in hindsight.

I don't think---I sure hope---Adams is not saying he is a more IMAGINATIVE or CREATIVE artist than Kirby. In that, Kirby had no peer. Kirby was an ideasmith unexcelled.

He's obviously a more *realistic* artist than Kirby (or most any of his contemporaries except maybe Mike Grell), but Kirby wasn't striving for realism. All that stylization was deliberate, and Kirby's still revered half a century later for good reason.

Yeah, and that's another reason that saying that in any sort of serious way is just pompous. Art's not something you can quantify than that so basically it's always opinion, and while there's nothing wrong with thinking you're good putting down another creator just seems petty.
Though based on most of his interview clips Adam seems to do petty pretty well.

Such things are subjective, and Mr Adams is definitely not above a little trolling just for the hell of it.

Yeah, without context and tone, it's hard to tell if he's saying that seriously, with a nod-and-a-wink or if he's somewhere in between. Adams is an artist on Kirby's level of innovative and influential, so it could be either. I don't necessarily agree, but I think it's a subjective call, anyhow.

As the few seconds of looking on the scans above show, no. He's not.

Is Neil Adams doing an "Origin of the New Gods" story? "Here's what the New Gods were before they were the New Gods?" Which CAN work. I've been a little uncertain where the New Gods fit in the NuDC with Diana's Greek Gods being around.

In every panel that he's in, Superman's face reminds me of a teenaged lifeguard who always shows up to work half-baked.
