CBR News: I'm sure Cassie's presence in the book has a lot of people wondering if you're interested in eventually having the her former teammates from the Young Avengers make an appearance in "Ant-Man."

Nick Spencer: Yes, my Tumblr questions are pretty much non-stop about the Young Avengers and whether or not they'll be appearing in the book. What I can say is be patient. Right now at the beginning of the book the focus is very much on Scott and Cassie's relationship and setting up their new status quo. As we go forward, though, you never know.

So the new Ant-Man series has arrived, so let's take a look at a particular scene that caught my attention. Read this to re-familiarize yourself with what has been going on with the character.

So... yeah... that's what's going on with Cassie Lang.

The MCU ties are strong with this one.

(I'm actually surprised they didn't turn her back into a 6 year old while they were at it.)

yeeeep.
I mean at least she has her history as a Young Avenger? It's not much but, I take what I can get.

Actually, MCU Cassie is FAR better than this one. MCU Cassie:

-Is actually pretty fun and endearing.
-Hasn't had a massive character regression.
-Is like 8 and hasn't had powers before. So even Scott's attitude towards her, aside from being better handled than it is here, makes sense.

"She may hate me now," oh, wah. You're still seeing her a much as you possibly can, still being as involved in her life as you can be while staying hidden. You're getting experiences that you're keeping from her. I don't care that it hurts you to hear your daughter say she's disappointed when you've made a deliberate show of disappointing her. You are hurting her.

Scott just comes across as so selfish here. He's doing this to protect his daughter and he still comes across as selfish. He hears Cassie talking about how she feels let down and immediately goes into how painful it is for him. He wishes he could tell her the truth, but he relates that wish to his hurt feelings instead of hers. No acknowledgment at all of the negative impact this is having on her. If he'd done at least that much, noted that she was hurt but that was better than her being in danger, I could forgive him a little. Not much, because I don't see why he can shrink down and follow her around but can't leave her a note explaining, but a little. But, no, it's all about him and how her hating him is better than her being in danger. Ugh.

Not to mention, she's kinda still in danger. I mean it's not like Scott has actually cut himself out of her life, he's still showing up to all that stuff, in costume and using his powers no less. The only difference is that before when she was with her father Cassie could be aware of the dangers, now she'd be completely blindsided if some supergoon showed up to take on Ant-Man.

That's a good point. I was wondering how him snubbing her now makes her any safer when everyone would still know who she is, but I didn't even think about the danger inherent in him still showing up and using his powers around her.

Not telling Cassie what's up already dismisses her agency, and now he's putting her in (potentially more) danger anyway :/

The sad thing is lots of people are going to be more sympathetic to Scott because people have a hate on for angst teenagers. Even if they're, y'know, fucking right.

Me, personally, I have a much greater dislike for Scott's actions. He didn't ask her opinion, he just did what he wanted.

Fucking motto. This is literally *everything* I was afraid it was going to be, after they took Cassie's heart. Depowered and used as angst fodder for her absent father. That just.... UGH.

Yeah, what you said.

Plus, I fail to see how a father staying away from his daughter is supposed to protect her. I mean, there's no changing blood.

It's like Spencer mixed the most angstiest parts of the movie into his book, and then dialed them up even worse, forgetting the happy parts.

Yeah, that stuck in my teeth too. People already know who she is. They know how to find her. How does dropping out of her life now make her safer?

Nick, the reason your Tumblr is full of questions about Cassie and the Young Avengers is that she is a much more popular character than Scott, movie or no movie.

This. I mean I am not even that big a fan of Cassie, and I can't even deal with the horrible treatment her character is getting. Also , of all things to copy ...why this? I mean Vision is not using Thor's hammer, Quicksilver is not dead, Hulk and Black Widow don't have a romance, Quill and Gamora don't have a budding romantic relationship, Loki is not evil right now, the current avengers line up has not matched the movie in awhile,Hawkeye does not have kids ad a wife, Tony and Pepper are not dating, and whole bunch of other things. Why do this ?

This kind of Sad Dad bullshit is exactly what caused me to drop this series months ago. Seriously, I wanted to like this book, and I was even willing to get over the movie tie-in aspects that saw Scott Lang's previous characterization get thrown out and Cassie sidelined to do so. But turning Cassie not just into a damsel in distress, but the source of some truly fucking tedious moping on Scott's part ruined this book for me.

You know this whole protecting loved ones from your enemies thing doesn't work so well when the loved ones in question was until recently a superhero in her own right and is still friends with several powerhouses.

So, superheroes have to be alone and miserable for the rest of their lives? Good grief.

You know how I've said Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne don't have to be Peter Parker? (Alienated and ignored while teenagers, limiting their social skills.) That goes double for other Marvel superheroes!

I loved the last volume of this series, I spent some time defending how Spencer was using Cassie as a supporting character saying "Wait and see what happens before complaining"

Well the wait is over and this is bullshit. They've literally ripped out Cassie heart to give her powers to a shitty villain that no one is taking seriously, and now she's defenseless and feels abandoned by her father and has no idea what kind of danger she's been in and could still be in. Crossfire took her from her school, the Cross family knows who she is, where she is and they have a vendetta against Scott, and he won't even fucking tell her let alone talk to her.

Fuck Scott and his manpain.

What I wonder is how often does Scott creep around eavesdropping on his daughter's conversations for the sake of his own validation? Like, that's probably like a ten minute car ride at least. He can't use that time to find ways to reconnect with his daughter?

He's clearly not fighting a super villain right now. Get out of your fucking costume and pick her up from Basketball yourself!

Well, he says he hasn't missed a single game, doctor's appointment or parent-teacher night. If he follows her all the way home after every event, that certainly adds up to a lot of creeping and eavesdropping. Heck, even if he doesn't follow her home after every event, that adds up to a lot of creeping and eavesdropping...

There are several things I don't like about this, and many others have articulated them well, but the one that made me IRL gasp out loud was reading that Scott gave up a chance to have joint custody of Cassie. NO. Just NO. Never in fifty million years would he (well the version of him that I love...the pre-movie (that I liked! And even saw twice!), first-time-with-the-Fantastic-Four version) do that. The chance to have more time with her is a big part of what he's always been about!

I almost wish Peggy hadn't offered, now, and that we'd gotten to see why - that she'd thought about it, but reconsidered after seeing how Scott disappeared from Cassie's life again.

And I wonder how disappointed/upset Dr. Sondheim is feeling now.

So they went with the least interesting option. Srsly this is as tired as "we can't be together because super-villains." It's so safe it's actually risky by being so dull

Nick Spencer is much better on Cap
