Brenden Fletcher: I think Batgirl as a character had been in such a dark place, it was an obvious journey for us. Cameron [Stewart] and I wanted for her to be the Batgirl that we grew up with — not exactly in her characterization, but in the way that she felt like the iconic version of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl: Yvonne Craig from the 1966 Batman TV show, Barbara Gordon from Batman: The Animated Series, from the old comics in the 1960s and 70s. We wanted to feel that from the character.

Writers: Brenden Fletcher & Cameron Stewart
Artist: Babs Tarr

Hmm, if this is an example of what we can expect, then I like what they're doing with batgirl.

Admittedly, the whole 'death maze' thing is a bit trite, but at least the cheat-code bit is new and the concept of 'video game taken to a new level' is logical, in it's own twisted way.

Honestly I'm happy to see a classic death maze, it feels like it's been too long since we've seen a villain break out that type of gimmickry.

I'm waiting to see the Riddler catch up to them in prison. "So I heard you two were getting in on the death maze racket."

Y'know Babs could have just asked Pearl and Garnet for help, I mean, they're right there and everything!

Garnet is probably in a date with herself and Pearl is her beard :P

This is not bad, but I wish it had been Stephanie instead of Barbara :/

Blame editorial

For locking her to Eternal at the time.

I always thought the exact same thing when I read Stephanie's run! That I wished it were Barbara instead! Barbara was created in an era that did her no favors, and never achieved her potential.

This is like Scott Pilgrim meets Batgirl. I like it.

I would say that this is is Batgirl in a "X-Men vs. Arcade" comic with a Scott Pilgrim aesthetic.

I'm not sure why someone is that worried about keeping her balance on top of a flat surface that obviously has enough room for her to sit down upon. and that's a lot of calculations for "step on the black squares," but it's nice to know that everyone involved has seen The Five Doctors.

I'd guess from her talk of a pattern and all the math that the black squares aren't constant, but change in some kind of pattern that Babs was able to figure out.

But yeah, Five Doctors reference all over the place. I was expecting her to finish the line with pi.

This is cool. It even managed to surprise me: I thought at first this Dana calling for help was in on the scheme too. I very nearly went all Admiral Ackbar before remembering Barbara is fictional and can't hear me. :D

Well, Dana's last name does bring to mind "Killer Moth", Batgirl's first foe.

I think this is part of why I've been really enjoying this run. Look, I know I'm in the minority, but for however many awesome Oracle scenes there's been, when I think "Barbara Gordon," I think of her in Batman: The Animated Series--I can even still hear her awesome music from that time. So I'm really liking that we get the classic Barbara, and having a bit of Oracle in there with her tech skills and Frankie assisting.

This is what most people in the real world think of regarding Barbara, actually. Thousands read comics with Oracle, millions know Babs as Batgirl from the various TV shows.

I still miss Oracle; but this doesn't stop me from enjoying this. At least Batgirl is using her brain, and you can't help but think the creators are enjoying their run on Batgirl. Enthusiam is contagious.

I think it should be some sort of rule: you have to like the character who you are writing, otherwise you shouldn't be writing it. Denny O'Neil is a great Batman writer, but he sucked on Superman, because he didn't really like the character. Elliott Maggin was a great Superman writer, because he really LIKED the character.

Which brings me to what's happening to Superman...oh, nevermind. That's another post. But yes, I'm enjoying this.

Especially going by the tone of his other, more famous works... I blame editorial and Yang having to work with what Geoff Johns left him.
alschroeder3: (Default)
From: [personal profile] alschroeder3
I'm puzzled too. I've loved Yang's other work. I'm not blaming Geoff Johns either, because his Superman was pretty spot-on. I guess it's a new editorial direction--and I can only wait till the next reshuffling of reality, because the Clark Kent reveal will ruin the character, IMO.

Hence why I chalked it up to editorial

Yang's stated interest in emphasizing/exploring the immigrant angle with Clark/Superman is clear (to say nothing of the parallel with his famous American-Born Chinese) and such an angle isn't something that needed the secret-identity exposure to work, so to some degree I see Yang's upcoming work as him doing the best that he can with a terrible hand that if dealt to a less-solid writer would have ended up even worse.
