"I tried to think 'what would Pixar do with this concept?' We tried to create a really nice, complete adventure that says everything about Captain Marvel that's pure and great and non-ironic." -- Grant Morrison

"Grant mentioned it to me as this is the 'All-Star Superman' for Shazam/Captain Marvel." -- Cameron Stewart

I did buy/read this and I liked it very much. The art was nice and the story was simple. So I will give GM that. However...from the interview with Morrison: ..."But that one is my attempt to see if you can get the pure note of Captain Marvel, with no irony and no camp and just make it work for everyone. It's like a myth, a little folk tale. It's pure. There are no apologies for Mary Bromfield writing in her 'good deeds' ledger. The model was Pixar. I tried to think 'what would Pixar do with this concept?' We tried to create a really nice, complete adventure that says everything about Captain Marvel that's pure and great and non-ironic."

I'm pretty sure there HAVE been successful "attempts" to make a Captain Marvel story with no irony, no camp and no attempt "to make him edgy" (as Morrison put it earlier). There was Jeff Smith's Monster Society of Evil (successful), Paul Dini/Alex Ross' "Shazam: Power of Hope" GN (successful), the little Billy Batson book for DC Kids by Franco and Balthasar which followed the Jeff Smith continuity (successful in terms of storytelling at least), Alex Ross/Jim Krueger's "Justice", Captain Marvel's appearances in Geoff Johns' JSA before he was jettisoned from the book (not including that hideous final arc), the entirety of the "Underworlds Unleashed" company crossover which was entirely predicated on how Billy/Cap was the purest soul in the world (OK, that was only somewhat successful).

Morrison is not inventing the wheel here. It is DC Editorial that has resisted and defied these successes (with Didio outright saying the Marvel Family didn't "fit" the ethos of the modern DCU). So we have a pitch for traditional interpretation of the Marvel Family in an monthly ongoing by two A-listers in Geoff Johns and Alex Ross actually rejected in favor of Judd Winick's "Trials of Shazam" which completely destroys the mythos and powers, puts Junior in the main role, pushes Billy to the side and actually puts Mary into a coma. And Morrison himself (who now makes "no apologies" for Mary Bromfield's good deeds ledger) was the inventor of the Black Mary Marvel fiasco - since he wanted to corrupt the purest beings for Final Crisis AND he wanted a suitable rival for Supergirl was able defeat to define the future of "femininity in the DCU" (yes, he said that). This is all on DC here and the troubles the Shazam franchise has had is (as Mark Waid put it when referring to Mary specifically): "is nothing to do with what’s broken or not broken about the concept, and everything to do with a bunch of creepy-ass older men working out their issues." If Disney owned Captain Marvel we would have seen cartoons/live action movies and yes possibly even a Pixar film already.

To be fair though, the version of Black Mary we got int countdown was never Morrison's plan... it was never supposed to be Mary's fault, it was always meant to be Dasaad. Or so I've read anyway.

Yes, Morrison wasn't responsible for Countdown Mary (the worst interpretation). But he was responsible for the idea of Black Mary Marvel and he was the one responsible for not telling the Countdown/Editorial people how Mary Marvel was supposed to end up evil in FC (mind-control) which led them to make it all of Mary's own volition because all they knew was she was supposed to end up a minion of Darkseid. And the interpretation of Mary in FC is hardly anything to write home about - she is never given any agency, she is basically (if we go by Morrison's writing) mind-raped and physically experimented on (an underage girl), almost killed TWICE (by Black Adam and by Supergirl who is supposed to be the "hero") while not in control of herself, has to be saved by a dude (Freddy) ad then is given ZERO closure for all her trauma (unlike again - Supergirl). The next time we see Mary in DC continuity she is Black Mary AGAIN and gone back to the dark side with Black Adam (in the JSA arc where she is dressed for some reason in her DeSaad/FC outfit). Morrison wasn't interested in Mary except as a punching bag/opponent for Supergirl. He pretty much said as much in a couple of interviews at the time (i.e. that storyline was about corruption vs purity - with Supergirl being the pure hero).

I wouldn't call Supergirl of that time a pure anything. And that's a pretty baffling matchup for such a conceit too. Why not, say, one of the Female Furies? They're a far better example of evil corrupting the soul and twisting the mind than a randomly-converted superhero.

According to Morrison he read the Supergirl as she appeared in Mark Waid's Brave and the Bold series (teamed up with Hal Jordan) and thought she was sweet and nice. Obviously that was not how she was being portrayed at the time in her own title but no one at DC thought to point this out.As for why Mary? Does DC ever need a reason to use the Marvel Family (be it Billy, Mary or Freddy) whenever they need another hero for anyone from the Superman to beat up on? Its par for the course. Peter David even had his much lower-powered Linda Danvers Supergirl fighting Mary Marvel to a standstill in the previous Supergirl title.

I don't think Morrison is claiming this hasn't been done before.

I think his point is that DC isn't treating Captain Marvel pure and unironically RIGHT NOW. Which they most certainly aren't. Or in the last few years, outside of out-of-continuity projects like the ones you mentioned.

I don't dispute that. I'm just saying Morrison has BEEN one of those who have been behind the corrupted and ironic version of the Marvels. It's not like he's an innocent in the way DC has used the characters.

I remember years ago when I saw black and white previews of the opening scene, and I was speculating that Shazam was playing angry birds on a Tablet Billy bought him.

Good times, Good times.

Anyways, my favorite part of this was Sivana being taken aback at mad slasher Sivana.

I also like how Slasher Sivana and Good Sivana are the only ones who don't look cartoony.

Another thing I like: How do you take the magic out of a wizards lair? Convert it to a corporate office!

+1 on the office thing! Just now noticed that angle.

Even that Shazam stone idol looks flustered at Sivana's blasphemy.

I also like the good Sivana freaking out at every other possible version of him being evil. Poor guy probably can't even catch a break in his own universe with that kind of luck.

Kind of... he's a little too chiseled to be Rusty. Though now I can't stop thinking of Rusty as an alternate Sivana, or at least mistakened as one, and his reaction to getting dragged to one of these meetings.

I still love the "loosely enforced child labor laws" line.

Wait, so is Morrison saying that Sivana of all people is behind what's going on in the metaplot of this series? Because I didn't expect that, but it'd make sense considering that IIRC the Rock of Eternity is actually its own plane on the nu52 separate from all of the other universes.

Then again, I could be reading too much into it, considering some of the other Multiversity issues had their own explanations for what was going on, and others don't even bother with it at all...

crinos: (Default)
From: [personal profile] crinos
I don't think he's saying Sivana is behind it, its just that he's taking advantage of the situation.

Once Sivana found these comics that are revealing the multiverse, he decided "Hey, why don't I call up all the other Sivana's from the rest of the multiverse and then we can really wreck some shit."

Also, I just had a thought: The interdimensional council of Sivana's vs. the Interdimensional council of Reed Richards.

The science fight to end all science fights.

I adore what it says about Sivana and about Morrison's super villains in general - there's so much tragic pathos in that "CURSE YOU, SIVANA!", not unlike the admonition by Superman in A-SS to Luthor: "You could have saved the world years ago if it really mattered to you."

The point being that the thing standing in the way of the villain isn't the hero: it's the villain himself.

It's amusing given all the potshots that Morrison has taken at Moore over the decades. And Morrison has already done his take on Watchmen in this series, not to mention that the idea of there being a big structure to the multiverse, with the ability of alternate versions of the same character being able to meet, interact and even aid each other, dates back to Moore's run on Captain Britain.

I have a feeling we'll see Good Sivana again in Ultra Comics, given that the solicit says it involves a team of scientists.

Either that or he's a past version of the one from "Curse of Shazam"...or an antimatter counterpart that Mazahs hasn't gotten around to murdering yet.

I think that that's a general rule when it comes to evil counterparts. Like in the original pre-cartoon version of Young Justice, Arrowette panics over the fact that if she were evil she'd have to wear a cleavage-exposing outfit and then panics more over the fact that she'd have to get cleavage fullstop.

This is almost as good as Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam!. Very good work, especially in taking the time to show actual differences between how Mary, Freddy etc...use their powers and skills in the comic. Everything about this is spot-on with how Big Red's world ought to work.

So when Billy said "Black Sivana is coming..." I half-jokingly thought, "well, I know he means some kind of Black Adam type, but it would be hilarious if-"

Cut to the lower-right monitor with the reveal of all the alternate Sivanas: "Nooooooo..." Thankfully, no, African-American Sivana is not the ultimate mastermind behind it all. But in some small way I was snickering a bit at that, just a tad.
