How the world's greatest super-villain came to be...

It's Gladiator Gladstone to the rescue!

Years later...

Some investors are interested in funding Edison's latest research. His experiment to create a portal between universes is now a go.

However, when the fateful day of the first trial run comes, as Edison attempts to pilot a ship through the portal, something goes wrong:

So my guess is that it's blue hair cybergirl who did the sabotage, and Valiant really WAS the innocent beneficiary of powers.

That is correct.

I'm skeptical.

I think the virus had to be real, because Valiant confirmed it. It's never been clear if Edison was lying in #1 or somehow stumbled onto the truth.

But there's only two scenarios I can see longterm. Either Valiant "played along" in #1 and faked his death to goad Edison into heroism...

... Or Valiant really was a sleeper and Edison caught his virus before Valiant died, which means Edison may start to have powers emerge. Which would explain his abrupt turn and what makes him so different from his counterparts.

Also... I'm skeptical that the experiment WAS sabotaged. I think what happened was, Edison crossed over into an empty universe. Something is destroying them.

I don't think we'll see Edison develop powers, simply because Chris Roberson's idea from the start was to play up the parallels between a Doc Savage, science/pulp adventurer and a mad scientist like Lex Luthor. Giving Rex superpowers would undermine that, which is why I think it's unlikely to happen.

Valiant having faked his death on the other hand, I could see, especially with the revelation that the death pod thing was originally one end of a teleporter. Maybe Valiant knew about it beforehand and reconstructed the receiver, in order to let Rex think he'd succeeded, or maybe Valiant isn't dead, just teleported to a random location in space. Either way it would make for good story fodder, letting us see if Rex could get over his petty grudge now that he's trying to be a hero.

Also I like your idea about the experiment going perfectly, the other universe was just empty, it sounds like a great tie-in to the current mega-arc.

Huh. Silly thing for me to focus on, but how exactly did Valiant hide biceps like that in that lab coat?

Presumably the same way Superman and Batman hide the fact that they're ridiculous slabs of muscle when they're Clark and Bruce.

(Mainly, through applied phlebotinum.)

I've seen Clark be recognized as plenty big often enough. Usually fits his 'farmboy' background.

My favorite was during Marvel vs DC, when Peter/Ben asked Lois out on a date.

Lois: "--I'm married."

Clark: *LOOMS* "TO ME."

Ben: *flail* "Oh! Geez, you could squash me like a bug, Clark. Sorry....think I'll go to the darkroom and change my roll. Or develop some shots. Or die of embarrassment..."

I love how they're all named for comic book companies.
Gladstone (Disney-related comics)
Maverick (a Dark Horse imprint)
Milestone (A DC imprint... obviously that's the black guy)
Valiant (enjoying their latest revival)
Archie (represented by the dog...)
Ace (a Golden Age pulp-style publisher)

As naming conventions go, it's not that bad. I know we saw others listed back in the first issue, too.

IS the lady with the blue/green hair and facial circuitry supposed to be the future Cerebrella?

Eh regular Luthor had the same dynamic with Superman in the silver age because of the whole hair thing.
