Justice League #22

Captain Marvel goes to Khandaq to spread out Black adam ashes. He feels guilty for his death and thought this would be the best way to ease his conscience by give him a proper funeral.

The Khandaq army attacks him and Billy gets annoyed by the ammunition thrown at him. But before he can do anything else, Superman comes along and super speed punches him. Bill regains his footing and punch Superman back and excitedly surprise about his powers to do that to man of steel. Superman recovers from the punch and super speed bum rushes Captain Marvel .

The Justice league of America shows up on the scene surprising the Justice league. Both groups get into a argument of course over which group going to handle Captain Marvel.

So the trinity war begins with Doctor light "death" being the catalyze for it to happen.

The issue ends in a all out double page brawl between the Justice league of America and the Justice league.

First of all, "impute?"

Secondly, this is terrible. This is everything wrong with Geoff John's current writing wrapped up in one oversized package. Asshole superheroes? Check. Gratuitous death as a means of establishing conflict? Check.

You know, even though I kind of liked this issue, I still kept asking myself one question: "Who is the bigger idiot in this story?"

Is it Madame Xanadu, who in spite getting visions of the Justice League's future instead of Plastique's, doesn't ask herself "Why am I not seeing this woman's future?" until it was way too late?

Is it Superman, who in spite of knowing Wonder Woman for the past five years to the point where's he's now dating her, has only now learned that an Amazon Warrior such as herself has no problem killing her enemies when necessary? Or the fact that he's faced with both the Pandora from myth and how his girlfriend can back up her story, yet he refuses to believe it or even discuss it? Or, despite his misgivings, willingly takes a weird skull box for him to open? Or when Doctor Light accidentally zaps Wonder Woman, him flying all into a rage at the guy who openly said he absorbs light/solar energy from him?

Is it Billy Batson/Shazam, who decides to do the honorable thing in releasing Black Adam's ashes, and is determined to do it at Kahndaq even though it would mean violating that country's airspace, but figures it's not a problem since Superman and Wonder Woman did it, too--thus being the very person which starts the Trinity War in the process?

Is it Pandora, who only assumed that because Superman was the strongest and most powerful superhero that he'd be the one to open the box, even though, given how many his being raised on Earth would give him a more human view of things, not to mention that one of he's susceptible to all forms of magic?

Is it Amanda Waller, who, because she is so hellbent on taking down the Justice League, decides to draft Doctor Light to the team, despite him having no battlefield or combat experience, with as of yet untested super-powers from a strange device, and not thinking something could seriously go wrong? Not to mention her deciding to pick a fight with the Justice League at that particular time "just because?"

Or is it the Atom, who decided to alert Amanda Waller about the Justice League going to Kahndaq? Then, once the big fight is about to start, blurting out within Element Woman's earshot that she works for the JLA?

Then again, misunderstandings and rash decisions are usually how these super hero brawls start anyway.

At least we now have an idea how the Justice League Dark gets involved, considering how it appears Madame Xanadu was the one murdered. And probably why Wonder Woman eventually joins up with them, as she most likely assumes Pandora was the one responsible since she was the one who gave Superman the box which caused him to act nuts. Although, the solution to how the Outsider framed Superman seems pretty clear: since Doctor Light can absorb light energy, including solar energy stored in Superman, he would also be able to accidentally draw out Superman's heat vision even if Superman wasn't trying to use his heat vision, since it would be just another form of concentrated light. Of course, the Outsider also had to count on Amanda Waller's foolish decision to put Doctor Light on the team, and for Doctor Light by being near Superman to accidentally blast Wonder Woman, thereby making Superman all angry to get up close to Doctor Light.

I'm guessing that Light isn't actually dead and he just tricked Superman into thinking he used heat vision to kill him when he actually didn't.

OH GOD, WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!

...Thinking about it, by "somebody" I guess I really mean Superman.

So yeah. Dammit, Superman stop killing everyone who looks at you funny.

Okay, this is basically a bunch of superhero jerks acting like idiots. Again. Gee, and they wonder why the world hates and fear and them.

The Question investigating a conspiracy that revolves around Superman killing another character using heat vision?

Sounds familiar.

So Billy gets punched and than dogpiled by an entire group, and yet he is 'rude' for calling them jerks?

so... wait.... Question ISN'T a bad guy here?

[personal profile] cypherfdp 2013-07-10 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, why are they attacking Billy? Did he retaliate against Khandaq's military? Why does Doctor Light absorbing Superman's solar energy result in blasting Diana and why doesn't he absorb it again right after? If that's not Superman, why is he totally aware of what he just did and shocked by it? Isn't this Question evil?

Why is everyone a gigantic asshole? Why are we making heroes fight each other again?

Did Superman just kill another hero because of an accident?! I...

I'm getting the same impression of this Superman as what I got hearing about Man of Steel, and that's not a good thing.

Are we sure this is actually the Justice League? Things like this make you wonder.

While I'm glad to learn that Superman didn't intentionally use his heat vision to "kill" Doctor Light, I still think having him attack Doctor Light like he did makes him look like a child. I mean, we know Wonder Woman is a superhuman and is probably fine, so having Superman fly off the handle makes him look like an unstable jerk. Plus, SUperman obviously saw/heard Light struggling with his powers, he should have realized it was unintentional.

Also not to happy to hear that Superman's first act on seeing Captain Marvel was to immediately punch him and ONLY THEN ask what he was doing in Kahndaq. Like, if he'd at least asked first it wouldn't have been so bad, but attacking someone and only afterwards trying to open the lines of communication is just dumb. Superman doesn't seem to be acting like fucking Superman at all, and that's annoying.

This is all just more of the same dreck that I've come to expect from Justice League, I'm glad I'm not following any of those books. Stuff like this makes me feel embarrassed to read comics.

Ugh. Just ugh.

I can't believe they went with Arthur and not Kimiyo Hoshi. Like seriously way to erase further diversity.

Ooh, I've got it now. This ISN'T the Justice League. No, the Justice League would have stopped Billy or pulled him aside first and then started fighting if he was aggressive.

And Superman would have not jumped the gun on Dr. Light or so easily lost his very dangerous temper (I thought Superman's thing was that he couldn't truly get angry, aka lose control, because of his World of Cardboard Speech).

No, this is...

THE LOSER LEAGUE

Yes, the Loser League! Banded together from across the world of poor writing. Faster than the speediest editors, more powerful than any train of logical thought, able to make great leaps of Epic Fail in even a single page! Together, they are here to waste your time, and fight the forces of actual creativity and effort (because who wants THAT, am I right?)

The actual Justice League are taking the vacation in Hawaii they were given by DC comics when the New 52 came out. I think we should call them up and inform them how their good names are being ruined. Does anyone have Clark's cell number by any chance?

No no no no NO.

One of the differences between DC and Marvel is that at Marvel, when super-heroes and super-teams first meet, they tend to get in a fight. Starting with Sub-Mariner vs. the original Human Torch, to the first meeting of the X-Men and Avengers to any casual meeting between super-heroes, they tend to get in a brawl, take their measure of each other, and only eventually turn to the bad guy. Even when they work together, it's often the friction that we remember--Spider-Man and Human Torch, Human Torch and the Thing, Wolverine and Cyclops.

At DC, they tended to not get in senseless brawls at first like adolescents. When the Justice League and Justice Society first met, they compared notes like the professionals they were, and went after their enemies together. Nor are they alone. Batman and Superman, Flash and Green Lantern, Atom and Hawkman, teams like The Challengers of the Unknown and the Doom Patrol---at DC, friendships were first, not senseless brawls. Yeah, there were a few later antagonisms---Green Arrow and Hawkman, but even that didn't stay under all writers. It was a little more boring, or a little more grown-up, more professional, depending on how you look at it.

One of the few things I disliked about Kurt Busiek's JLA/Avengers is how they were both instantly antagonistic. If they stayed true to each's continuum, the JLA should have extended their hands in friendship, and the Avengers should have overreacted in suspicion and started a fight.

Having the three Justice Leagues immediately fight is a Marvel cliche, and downright silly in DC terms. The League as originally created were the adults in the room, the professionals, the world's greatest heroes. The sort of group Batman might join.

This...just isn't them.

Seriously? Does every single (literally) first meeting between Superman and Billy/Cap/Shazam have to be them fighting and more importantly - Superman WINNING? Outside of Kingdom Come (where Superman was older and it was still a draw) can anyone remember a time when DC let Billy/Mary/Freddy actually win a clean fight with someone with "S" on their chest? I know Johns even had Superboy beat Freddy in Titans Future...and there was Peter David having Mary and Linda Danvers Supergirl (who was not even Kryptonian) fight to a draw.

It's ridiculous.

I'm not sure if it was in here, but I remember someone asking why they didn't use Doctor Light (Kimiyo Hoshi) in the team.
Now I'm thankful they didn't.

Awkward question but I'm assuming this version of Arthur Light isn't... you know...

And is he even still Arthur Light? Or some third Dr. Light?

The last page has the Outsider saying to himself "Thanks to me, everyone will actually believe that Superman killed Doctor Light."

So it's not like Supes just lost his temper and killed him or something.

The hell business is it of the Justice League's is it that Captain Marvel is flying over Khandaq and getting into a "misunderstanding?" That just seemed so...random and stupid. Seems like things went too fast and cheesily so. >_

So after Trinity War is Forever Evil, right? So basically, this is Civil War leading up to Dark Reign? How original, DC.
