The book opens with the Phantom Stranger nailed to a tree in a very personal abyss, sacrificing himself in a bargain to release his mortal family from the horrific state they've been placed in by the Sin-Eater. Last issue, you'll recall that this character was once Philip Stark a serial killer who was about to murder his wife and children.

The Phantom Stranger makes a deal with the Sin Eater for the life of his family.

Yeah, Stranger, buddy. I think you've done enough. He should've just iced Stark and walked away instead of pretending to be him.

But that's what the REAL Phantom Stranger would do (or the Spectre), but no we can't have that. We must have this Stranger, who is not really a stranger but Judas Iscariot who not only betrayed Jesus in this universe, but is also a rapist. God, I hate the New 52 so much now. I remember being so excited seeing the Phantom Stranger in that Justice League back-up for the first time in forever. So much wasted potential.

so just going in after they're dead and killing their murderer is all the Stranger should have done. Sounds more like a 90's anti-hero to me, or at best the Punisher

No the Stranger should have killed Stark and exposed his crimes before he killed his family.

It would suck for them but A. They'd be Alive and B. hopefully able to move on with their lives.

It would also allow all the families of his many victims to have closure on what happened to their family members..

It would also have the added benefit of not creating a Supernatural Devil.

Also we wouldn't have a comic book where the Protagonist is a rapist.

Oh god, this comic has put me so far into Team Nobody that I don't even know what to do with myself.

Stranger? Yeah, just ... fucking stop already.

Sin Eater? You officially lost any right to be sanctimonious when you tried to kill your entire family. You fuck right off.

Scottie Godhood? Stop speaking like the Stranger did a terrible thing by intervening with the family's potential murder. Actually, the entire tone of this is condemning Stranger for daring to do something heroic instead of the actual sketchy shit he did after.

And it's a shame, because spending time in hell without remembering who you were doing it for and why you cared for them so much? That's the most deliciously and tragicly sadistic personal hell I've seen since Silent Hill. And it's ruined because GO TEAM NOBODY!

Okay PS, answer me this; As someone directly involved in the fate of the Christian Messiah, why would you view guaranteed eternity in Heaven as being something to rescue them from?

And it should be remembered that Judas' sin was not the betrayal, it was despair, in believing that Jesus would be unable to forgive him for his betrayal. (Compare with Peter, who denied Christ, but repented and was absolutely forgiven by the man himself)

well, this Judas didn't give in to despair. He was judged by Shazam and a council of other powerful beings, not sure if they were supposed to be gods, and actually begged for forgiveness on the grounds Jesus had surely forgiven him, though I am paraphrasing there.

My personal opinion remains, by being the guy to do the most unpleasant task, he sort of volunteered himself for other unpleasant tasks.

And I would suppose that heaven or not pain in life matters. You're not supposed to commit suicide. And you're supposed to help people who need help. So basically my point is deciding that a great reward awaits them is not a reason to accept death

Oh no, Sin Eater? Now he's going to kill Jean DeWolff and indirectly lead to Eddie Brock becoming Venom!
