On his tumblr page, Kieron Gillen has written a series of short essays detailing his take on the Young Avengers.

The Introduction

Marvel Boy

Hawkeye

Miss America

Wiccan

Loki

Hulkling

And to keep this all nice and legal, here's a cover by Skottie Young.

(Admins, could we get a tag for Miss America/America Chavez? I think we're going to need one.)

In other words, if Billy’s Frodo, that means Teddy is Sam.

I fucking love Sam.

i hate him.

my favorite write up was noh-varr's. he really is the sex-cake.

,.... i thin Sam was a asshole to Gollum.... but at the same time, he wasn't wrong.... but to Frodo... any everyone else, he was a loyal and true friend.... I always felt conflicted with him....

In what way? Sam was practical, sensible, had a wide range of useful skills, and was intensely loyal to his employer and his friends.

His suspicions about Gollum might, I suppose, count against him if he hadn't been pretty much entirely right about them.

Good, because I think I understand what happened at the end of JIM but I can't say I'm sure.

I keep thinkning that maybe Loki is intrested in Billy because he's supposedly a part of of Mephisto, and Mephisto is an ally/enemy of Loki's. But Kieron pretty much said he won't delve into Billy's origin.

Does anyone know why Eli was off-limits to Gillen? Is he in any other ongoing series? Not that I'm complaining, since we get America Chavez and Kate gets to see Noh-Varr dance around in his undies.

When the Young Avengers disbanded at the end of Children's Crusade, Eli gave up being a superhero and moved to live a quiet life in Arizona. I just assume he didn't want to reverse that so soon.

Argh. Argh. Why does he have to be so darn awesome and likeable? My life would easier if I could just go "pfft, whatever."

From one of the posts:
"He’s also hot.

Ever since our work on Phonogram, Jamie have strove to make our comics – for want of a better phrase – slash-fic-able. If you’re working in certain heroic fantasy genres, that’s part of the emotional churn. And that part is what loses the sort of person who thinks by Jamie redesigning Ms. Marvel’s costume he’s destroying the “sex-cake”.

(Oh man. Someone really did say Jamie had removed the icing from the sex-cake. Sometimes all you can do is blink when doing this gig. Blink so hard you hope your eyes open on some kind of better world. I digress.)

Anyway – point being: characters being sexy is cool but objectification in the process is bullshit. An inability to see the difference is a fundamental weakness. My wife’s in the next room watching Lord of the Rings, and I guarantee she’s thinking sexy thoughts about Aragorn. But that works without anything which annihilates him as a character, y’know? The readers mind will latch upon this stuff."

Aw, who am I kidding. I kind of want to marry his brain, there's no point in denying it.

It is a really rather intelligent approach to characters, I think, and I really like Gillen for it. I can really see what he means, though - even in Phonogram or in McKelvie's own Suburban Glamour, none of the characters are just 'sexy'. They might look great, but there's so much going on with them that their sexiness is almost a peripheral thing. And I think they've succeeded in doing that in their Miss America redesign. The original design in Vengeance was, to me, a little too fanservicey, but what they've done is to give her a costume that's thematically appropriate and helps raise questions about her.

So.. Definitely. Thumbs up to both Gillen and McKelvie for working with this approach in comics. Because there shouldn't be anything wrong with a character being sexy, but that shouldn't be all there is to them.

We don't exactly know what her motivation is because Joe Casey never really offered up that much of one during Vengeance. Part of her purpose in Young Avengers is to keep an eye on Loki, however.

She is Hispanic, though, which has led to some idiot-ball moments where people have claimed she can't be called 'Miss America' because of it, conveniently managing to ignore that there's also a *Central* and *South* America she could have come from.

It's interesting to me that something Gillen regards as a big indication of heroism on Teddy's part was the big obstacle that made me go "WTF?" rather than sympathize with the character - his sweeping under the rug of his mother's death and almost immediately being on good terms with her killer. That raised a warning flag for me on the "she's not my REAL mom!" issue that far too many people who have no experience with adoption apply to adoptive parents. (Factor in how overly concerned Billy is with Wanda being his alleged mother when he had a perfectly good one who raised him, and it did a lot to put my nose out of joint regarding Heinberg's approach to the characters' backstory.)

Still, Teddy is devastated by the loss of his mother--the one who actually raised him, not Anelle. He does forgive the super skrull too quickly and too easily, I'll agree with that. I think he is a little desperate to know his own history, however, particularly because of his father rather than his mother--he grew up completely without a father figure so he clings pretty desperately to the notion of Captain Marvel being his dad. Also there's the whole "omg I just found out I'm a space alien the fuck" factor. But she's still "mom" to him after the fact and he still clearly loves her dearly as a parent. I do agree it could be handled better, but compare that to Billy, to whom Wanda is "his mom" almost immediately upon learning his supposed backstory, even though the Kaplan's are even his biological parents.

It's a huge failing on Heinberg's part, in my opinion; especially after he goes out of his way to present the Kaplan's as great parents in the scene when Billy accidentally comes out to them. Everyone's experience is different, of course, but speaking from my own experience, adoptive parents and real parents are synonymous. Heinberg doesn't seem to get that.

Based on what Gillen said in early interviews, way back when the book was first announced, it seems like that's an issue he plans to deal with pretty directly. At least in regards to Billy.

And the truth about what happened to Loki at the end of JIM will eventually explicitly work its way in, which will be a surprise to those who don’t like googling stuff and/or buying my older comics, and still a revelation to those who do. As always, there’s things people don’t know. In time, we’ll tell everyone about Loki’s guilty little secret and what it actually means for the Young Avengers. And Loki. And everyone.

In short: he’s on the team. But is he on the team’s side? We’ll see.

It will be a fun time. No-one will cry. No-one will be upset. No-one will die unmourned and unloved.

Honest.

No, really.

Why do people always presume I’m lying?

Sounds lovely, but I'm not over JiM yet and I just don't want to play. Plus, why get attached to young characters? They'll just end up victims of a murder book or die in a stupid event. From now on, I'm only reading about the virtually unkillable characters (the big names) or creator-owned comics. We'll see how long my resolve lasts.

Miss America is the main reason I want to pick up this series. Something about her I find so appealing. That vibe that screams "badass". Loki is the second reason.

As for Kate love her, but dammit has she and Eli finally dated? Sorry, but I'm on that ship. They clearly have feelings for each other but never pulled the trigger and she dates someone else. When will the payoff happen? As for her sex, life, I personally say, "Do your thang girl." Just hope her and Marvel Boy are just casual and nothing serious. Mainly because I do not care about him nor have I yet to find any reason to like him. Someone wanna tell me his so-called appeal? Also is he a teen or grown man? I swear he ages then de-ages.

The impression I got for Kate/Eli is that they were implied to have had a thing but had definitely broken it off by A:CC? I mean it was never directly address but that was the impression that I got. I do hope she's more casual with Noh as well, but mostly because I think that would be interesting. (And because I ship Noh/Annie and I'm still bummed about that breaking off...apparently it's going to be addressed though...)

As for Noh-Varr, he's been written so completely differently by each writer who's had him I'd say your best bet is to wait and see Gillen's interpretation and make your own judgement call. It already seems drastically different AGAIN. And if I had to guess I'd say he's 19-20? He's definitely aged since his introduction and he was recently dating a university student, so...
