Do not leave a lot to alleviate our worries.

In fact, they inflate them.

These are super early non-scan photos from the preview book, so sorry about the quality.  Ain't mine.

Sure, we have no context for it, and this could easily be a fake out, but it does confirm the Trigger Scent theory at least in part.  Which I still think is bullshit to do something like that so early from a narrative standpoint. And it hints to one of my biggest worries: that any character considered "too deadly" or "too powerful" will be killed off early to extend this thing.  The amount of damage Hazmat has taken in this preview (cracked helmet, torn suit, stomach wound) is not promising in the slightest.

I'm hoping for a fake out.  I mean, this sort off preview is designed to spark outrage and I bet they know it. We're being trolled, folks, either way this turns, we are being trolled.  Edit to add; especially if the character I dubbed "not Hazmat"  from the covers of 2  and 3 is actually Hazmat re-coloured due to plot.

10 out of 10, Marvel.  10 out of 10.

Man, and I wanted to post more fun pages from Academy soon.  Then this happens.

Edit: Double-picked it.  My bad

Final Edit: Ya know, I'm actually starting to feel a bit bad for Hopeless, here.  No matter what, he's sort off doomed and until this thing is published/completed, he's going to be inundated with angry fan mails.  It got so bad this evening with this that he deleted some comments from his blog.  It's the price of trolling, but I think a more reasoned explanation of our aggitation is in order, to show that A) we have a valid point, B) what truly gets us to read comics.

Well, I don't know of that's the trigger scent, it looks to me like she's just leaking energy due to the cracks in her suit. But it really does look like a scene where a character dies right before the "credits" in order to set the tone. But then again we were promised the first death would happen in the second issue.

Yeah, that definitely cinches it.

Also, is it just me, or does Laura have a new costume here? I don't remember her's being so...stripy.

Yea, though most of them aren't really costumes so much as outfits. Sometimes one piece, sometimes two, skintight, normally black, sometimes X-Force colors (black and grey). If it's civies, she wears a jacket.

There was one Marvel Team-Up book where X-23 along with some other characters ended up in the future, and the Reed Richards there was "Ah, X-23, I didn't recognize you out of your uniform." And I was like, "Wait, what? She's in a moderately different skintight black uniform, and she never wears a mask. Future Reed, your recognition skills suck."

(Or it might've been early enough that the 'savage' outfit he was referring to... but even by that point she had pretty much dropped it).

Isn't the whole idea that Arcade is making a show out of this, ala Hunger Games? If that's the case, then he would probably want a hell of an opener--so having the trigger scent put on someone so it starts with X-23 skewering someone makes sense.

Of course, I can also see Laura pulling herself out of it before Hazmat gets anything really permanent done to her.

you know... as someone who loved the hunger games, and well classic myth, and having an understanding of this particular type of narrative, a part of thinks that any "deaths" that do happen, will probably be 95% fake out. characters will "die" but most likely be taken and revived later (ala Mojo-verse)

i loathe death as a selling point, but if a good story can be made out of this, i'm game...

in other words, i am still on the fence, i know how EASY it will be for this to be utter and complete crap. but i also believe there is a hope for greatness...

The guy writing this has said point blank that these are supposed to be "real deaths", so not putting a lot of hope in the fake-out theory. From the concept to the cover art, Marvel has made it plain that killing off kid characters to show how hardcore Arcade has become is the driving point of this book.

Marvel has Missed the Point if it thinks "Look kids, child murder" is the selling point of Battle Royale or the Hunger Games. The survival games there proved points and provided satire, if you take that away all that's left is the very thing those books are criticizing for a quick cash-in.
Oh, and the continuing bile of a thousand fans, crying as one. How the hell does "Pay us to kill all your favorite characters horribly for money" sound like a good idea?

Not a telepath, obvs, but my guess at the thought process is that Marvel is writing off the people who were buying Runaways, Avengers Academy, etc. previously. If those books weren't selling, then obviously that audience doesn't matter (and never mind that AA lasted 40 issues + tie-ins and Runaways had 62+, thoroughly spanking "important" books like Generation Hope in both sales and longevity). They're thinking that the numbers they'll attract with this new concept will be over and above those of the cancelled books, which will make Avengers Arena a monetary success, no matter how much the people who care about the characters complain.

Which, again, is a big part of why I find this idea so distasteful. Marvel is marketing it as an underage kill-fest and betting that their readers will flock to it.

Fuck that noise. Not only am I not going to buy this, I've made sure to tell my LCS owner why. I'm hoping the more "you're wasting shelf space if you expect me to pick this up" feedback Marvel's real customers -- the shop owners -- get about this, the quicker this thing can be forced toward cancellation.

What is the deal with everyone having access to the trigger scent? Not only is it made by clandestine organization, it was created specifically for X-23. It's not a very useful chemical since it only works on X-23. The Facility only made a lot of it because they were planning to create more clones of X-23 but since that plan hasn't worked out, there's no reason for them to make any more.

And what would even happen if Hazmat died? Wouldn't she go off like a nuclear bomb? X-23 is tough but I don't think she can survive a nuclear blast. Maybe they're planning to eliminate Hazmat and X-23 at the same time.

Hazmat wouldn't necessarily explode like a nuclear bomb, since I remember the instance of her doing that in Academy had her doing it voluntarily, but how much of a mess she'd leave behind would depend on how badly she's injured and how damaged her containment suit is.

In her series, a group made a variant that works on everyone.

That was a pretty big plot hole since that's not how the trigger scent works. X-23 was specifically conditioned to go berserk when exposed to the trigger scent. The chemical itself is not special in any way, it's X-23's conditioning that makes it work. It's kind of like Pavlov's dog. They don't have a magical bell that makes dogs salivate, it's the conditioning that makes the dog salivate when it hears the bell.

Art looks pretty great! Nice!

Also... I can't possibly judge before I actually read or get a bunch of scans as we go along. Anyone whose groan attached to the characters will be annoyed full stop. But well, y'know... comics. Marvel and DC comics.

It's NOT ABOUT making a new generation of heroes that'll grow and be good for the next 50 years, they already have those, so y'know. I think that's a shame. But I understand what I'm getting into in a sense.

'Man,' said Quesada, 'We've really been falling back on our "kill a character a quarter" thing, in addition to DC beating us in the September Sales. Anyone got any ideas of how to correct that?'
Someone raises their hand, 'Well we could copy DC and kill off all the superfluous teenage superheroes, that might be popular.'

Yeah I don't wanna see the characters I like forced to violently kill each other.

These stories where children, especially those that are friends, are forced to murder each other disturb me, and I can't separate the fun from them. I'm a big fan of slasher and action films and ultra violence, but I can't stand this story.

Also I agree with Biod about removing the satire in these stories make them completely miss the point.

"I'm a big fan of slasher and action films and ultra violence, but I can't stand this story."

The difference is that the casts of a slasher film are either either complete idiots - who deserve to die, usually - or mildly sympathetic; If they're the latter, then unless it's something like Halloween with a cast member who gets carried over from film to film, it's sad that they die, but at least it's.. What, a ninety minute film and a standalone experience?

Here, it's characters people have known for years. Characters who aren't designed for this kind of scenario. Characters we're really attached to. They shouldn't be employed in this kind of book because the creators KNOW full well that we're attached to them, even if they're not as popular as the Avengers crowd.

YES. Exactly. It's different if it's the premise from a start, and we're introduced to these characters knowing full well what they're getting into.

But when you involve character that we love and have loved for years, and then you suddenly turn them into kill-each-other plot points -- it just doesn't work on the same level. :/

Which is the main reason I really, really hope it's a fake-out.

What if it's not X-23?

I mean Arcade does regularly build robotic duplicates of supers. It'd be a good way to destroy any trust they have between eachother

And no apologies for it. Marvel's been marketing this in a way meant to upset fans of these characters, and if part of that potential audience responds with a massive "do not want!" then that's on Marvel for spinning the book as a meat-grinder, not the customer for reacting based on the impression they've been given.

Also, Christos Gage has read the first issue and said that it's not going to change the minds of anyone who dislikes the concept being presented. Given that he's been a class act and would not be stirring shit against someone else's book, the fact that he's indicating that the whole thing is being played straight gives me even less reason to give the book the benefit of the doubt.
