auggie18's earlier post and the resulting discussion about heroes in Limbo reminded me of the epilogue of Ka-Zar the Savage #34. The final issue of the series where Ka-Zar ends up (once again) in the Land of Cancelled Heroes.
Clearly their limbo is superior to the DC one, since there's these nice grounds and a mansion. I do wonder who's hanging out there right now?
Let's see...guy on pg. 27 is Shang-Chi, and that's Man-Thing on pg. 28. Bottom of pg. 28: Guy with the rocket-trail is probably Nova, and the flying woman is either Ms. Marvel or Spider-Woman. Guy on the board is obviously Silver Surfer. Not sure about the guy in the cape, though. And the ever-popular Devil Dinosaur on pg. 29.
Never saw this before. Awesome! But I have to wonder if some of the characters in Limbo might look at the current states of their respective universes and feel at best ambivalent -- or perhaps actively resistant -- about being brought back? "Please, no, they'll make me a junkie rapist who attacks villains with a dead cat!"
Damn right...if you found out there was a chance you'd be drawn by Rob Liefeld if you went back to the land of the living, I'm pretty sure you'd be hiding behind the couch too.
Looking at the roster, only Black Goliath, Brother Voodoo, and Doctor Druid could really say that they were worse off for coming back. Even Omega the Unknown got that limited series a few years ago, and if I remember correctly, he ended his book when he got shot dead by cops.
Well, this was 1984. Many of these characters were creations of the 70's and were largely the product of various fads of the time. As their novelty wore off, so did the interest in them. Since most of the modern comic writers started reading around this time, I guess it's sort of a natural cycle that they would focus on their favored heroes of yesteryear and bring them back to the forefront.
Wow, a real who's who of the '70s. In order of appearance: Shang-Chi, Master of Kung-Fu Man-Thing A foursome composed of Nova, Silver Surfer, Omega the Unknown and Ms. Marvel (I think) Devil Dinosaur Full page with:It the Living Colossus, Doctor Druid, Brother Voodoo, Howling Commandos, Dracula(!), Ms. Marvel, Nova, Silver Surfer, Simon Garth the Zombie, Morbius the Living Vampire, Man-Thing, Ghost Rider (biker) and Ghost Rider (Western version), Spider-Woman, Deathlok, Man-Wolf, Bll Foster/(Black) Goliath, Killraven, and two I can't quite identify next to Deathlok. Final page has: Dracula, Silver Surfer, Two-Gun Kid, Nova, Omega the Unknown, Shanna the She-Devil, Howling Commands, N'Kantu the Mummy, Jack Russell the Werewolf by Night...
I'm impressed that they actually pulled off an issue like this, and crammed in so many characters. And depressed that I recognized almost all of them. Note the banner above referencing Crystar, the Crystal Warrior, as well.
I figured Ms. Marvel from the feminine outline and what looked like a sash. That, plus the presence of a masked, blonde woman later on, and the fact that Carol's first series lasted from 1977 to 1979, made me think she was there. After all, this is the Land of Canceled Heroes, and everyone there held their own feature or series for at least a little while... I'm pretty sure some of the others were present and accounted for in the "Real" Marvel Universe, active if not headliners, just like Carol. But it's hard to tell for certain without looking even closer. :)
