Date: 2012-05-17 07:51 pm (UTC)So for those who never read it, the one shot introduced Ben's annual solo vacation, the location of which he never told any of the F4 no matter how they begged. Sue persuades Reed that they should follow him and make sure he was okay but really she, like Johnny, was just curious as to where Ben went every year. Turns out it was Puerto Rico as these first two pages show; p01, p02.
Ben is less then pleased that his privacy has been violated and storms off. Sue follows feeling guilty for being the instigator. Another two pages, p01 and p02 before Ben walks off again.
Finally, some tourist go missing under mysterious circumstances and so the local government asks the F4 to investigate. While searching the nearby forest for clues, Sue has had enough of Ben's surliness and they have a talk. Final two pages; p01 and p02.
Then there's the entire issue of Fantastic Four #588.

1) The Nearness of You, Astro City -- A guy dreams every night about this lady who seems extremely familiar, who he knows absolutely everything about, but he doesn't quite know who she actually is. It drives him up the wall until the Hanged Man appears and tells him that the lady is his wife, but, due to superhero time-space wackiness, she never existed in this new reality. He is given the choice to forget all about it, but he turns it down. When he asks the Hanged Man, wondering how many people decided to forget, the Hanged Man replies that nobody ever does; everybody chooses to remember. So the guy goes back to sleep and happily dreams of his wife that never was.
2) About a dozen different stories from Sandman, but especially the Emperor Norton story, Wanda's arc (especially the end of it), Prez's story (because goddammit I love Prez Rickard--I like to think that, even though he's a DC character, he's somehow related to Captain America), and the entire finale.
3) To Kill a Legend -- which is not only a favorite tearjerker (though of a very heartwarming sort, rather than an "oh god my soul aches" sort), but possibly my favorite comics story ever. The Phantom Stranger pops up and offers to whisk Batman and Robin away to an alternate universe where the Waynes have not yet been killed, and where there are no heroes--not even the Greek myths with their heroes in the stars. Bats and Robin have to make a choice between saving Bruce and helping Gotham City. In the end, Bats and Robin save the Waynes, and wonder if they did the right thing... but the epilogue shows that alternate-Bruce is studying up on martial arts and detective stuff, and it's heavily implied that alternate-Bruce becomes Batman anyway.
4) That story where Spidey met God, was shown the amazing amount of good he'd done with his life, made peace with losing Aunt May, and lived happily ever after. (...I like happy tearjerkers.)
5) The Crow. All of it. It's one of my favorite comics (and the movie version is in my top-3 favorite movies as well). The story itself is tragic, and the story behind it is just as bad.

Noland being executed with his best friend nowhere to be found, Queen Otohime getting murdered at the very moment it looked like the dream she had worked so hard for was about to come true - all of them very emotional, powerful moments that linger in your mind for years. The fact that One Piece has so many moments and keeps making more is a large part of why it's so awesome.

New X-men – After a Rocket strikes a bus full of ex-mutant kids, issue 24 starts with a funeral, and everyone grieving and remembering the attempts they made to save the kids. As the funeral finishes we see there are 14 more coffins waiting.
On the next issue, Elixir, a mutant healer, who failed to save a single person on the bus even though he was there, storms off into the night. His girlfriend tries to make him see it wasn't his fault, and then gets killed with a single shot to the head right in front of him.

I think one of my favorite moments, are two actually. Death of Supergirl in Crisis on infinite earths, the death and everything leading up to it. its what i always thought a hero should be. brave, tough, caring and inspirational. When i was a kid, i love Tim Drake as Robin, still do, a part of me wanted to be him (kinda still do) But i will always, ALWAYS have a place in my heart for Pre-crisis Kara Zor-el. the bigger part of my heart wanted to be a hero like HER. She was and still is one of MY heroes.
the second is The Death of Superman from the Doomsday saga, i KNEW it was happening, i felt it coming, and i fought it hard, but there was no changing it, From Superman telling Lois "I will always love you... always" to when the words on the gatefold said "For this is the day...." i didn't want to pull it open because i knew what it would say. when i opened it and i read those words "That a Superman died" i balled.... Not as much as for Kara. and for two separate reasons. For Kara, it was her death as a true hero that did it for me. For Clark it wasn't that. it was moment he shared with Lois before that sold it for me....
BRB.... huddled in the corner and crying in the fetal position.. FOREVER

Date: 2012-05-18 06:24 am (UTC)I'd also like to submit "Auld Acquaintance" as another tearjerker--it was a short Deadman story from a bit after the Crisis, with him moping around at Christmas. Then a lady who can see him shows up to offer some uplifting advice and insight about heroism, and he asks who she is. "My name is Kara... although I doubt that means anything to you."

Thor handily defeats the man, but is impressed with him enough that he takes him to his next battle with a dragon (giving him a fraction of his own strength). Things do not go well. and though the man kills the dragon, he is fatally wounded in the process.
The Viking funeral afterwards and the Valkyries coming in are just tearjerkingly EPIC. You can practically hear Wagner.
Another one is from the Micronauts. One of the Micrvoerse worlds is a formerly temperate place, but now is reduced to some sort of Ice Age winter. As usual, Karza and the Micronauts come in with their war, and the native guy is caught in the middle. At first he was worshipping Katrza to beg for summer. But after being hit by Karza, he realizes the man is no god, but the devil. In the fight, he destroys a very important piece of machinery (some sort of solar lens) by jumping into it, and killing himself.
Summer comes to his world. As his spirit moves on, he realizes that his children, his tribe will never hunger again.
