Really loving this book so far. The characters are very interesting and Ben Oliver is truly a superb artist.

Judd Winnick's is on a role over the last several months. Massacre has been a great villain.

I think the biggest strength of the book is that it has it manages to use it's setting in Kongo as a unique feature and doesn't play into the stereotypical western view of Africa. It's also a enjoyable to read a spinoff/satellite title that's not heavily bound to the Bat-family, Batwing can easily support his own book.

Next stop Gotham!!!!!

"And by plenty of help, I mean two other people!"
"Are you sure? I'm sure that Black Bat, Nightrunner, Knight and Squire at free at the moment..."
"We have PLENTY of help!"

according to the cover it hink they are also including Barbara.

question though, isn't Nightrunner dead? i love Morrison, but some of his stuff is kinda hard to follow and require an extra read.

but totally with you on Black Bat and Knight and Squire (more squire as Knight never really stuck to me)

He was offhandedly mention as dead in Batman Inc: Leviathan Strikes, but I'm not entirely sure how real that was, or even if it holds in DCnU.

Nightrunner was mentioned as AWOL and presumed dead, but it was revealed towards the end that he and other Batman Inc. members, were actually captured and brainwashed into one of the Leviathan goons on that big ship. He was shown being helped up by Dick and presumably left the ship with the Bat-boys.

IIRC he was one of the handful of bat-operatives left dead at the end of the Leviathan Strikes! mini. But since it took place chronologically before the reboot, I am not sure what parts of it are still canon or not.

Ironically enough, it seems like that continuity thing is even weirder with Batwing, since Leviathan Strikes showed him as a playboy with a different last name. It would be funny if Winnick runs with it and says that it's an alternate identity that he was set up with.

Although Barbara is in the next issue, she isn't on that last page, so I didn't include her.

As far as I'm aware, only possibly the Outsiders are dead, Nightrunner I haven't heard about if he has too. In fact other than the Outsiders, the only member of Batman Inc that I think has actually died is the Russian one, and that was in Batman and Robin.

Cass not being involved I can probably understand (drawing the first Casstoon in ages about it), and really Squire was the main character whether the Knight is around too, with him effectively acting in the Robin role while she's the smarter, more organised of the two, if that makes sense.

Same as how Beryll had a character arc (of her dating the wannabe supervillain/hero Blud) across the length of their solo series, while Knight remained somewhat static.

Dude, one of them is NIGHTWING, the guy Superman is pleased to see show up in emergency situations! Robin's just there for moral support and to catch up with big bro! :)

The art is pretty, but the colouring is very odd, it seems sort of... out-of-focus and have a lot of pastels

its a smudged look combined with the low contrast. while it is pretty this causes some scenes to look... blotted out.

Very pretty. But also very static, which makes the fight scene look weird.

I'm in love with the art, and have been mourning Ben Oliver leaving the book since I heard about it. :(

The dialogue in this book is rather interesting--this is a book that could turn very "grim and gritty" real fast, with the locale, subject matter, and the kind of villain David is facing, but the dialogue feels like something from the Bronze Age, which really helps making it feel more like a superhero book that's just set in a different place than normal.

That's the kinda thing you'd want to scream before jumping career criminals. It's a Batman-type comment without it being something Batman would say.

I love the force they put in the action scenes. I don't know exactly what it is, but somehow the hits seem more realistic than the usual comic fight scenes.

Hahaha, agreed. Batman (and Gotham) has literally been shoe-horned in *everywhere*.

Seems so silly to put all that emphasis on the Congo just to take him out of it, feels like it'll detract from his character somehow.
