Four pages from SWAMP THING 1...

At the start of the issue, we find Alec Holland working as a construction worker, trying his hardest to ignore his past. Occasionally, the Green makes mild attempts to reach out to him, but he ignores it. One day, Superman shows up to check in on him.

"...right now, I just don't want to be found."

One night, he wakes up in his motel room to find himself being stalked by stalks.

Kinda intrigued, although that 'proudly presents' line just looks like they're giving the middle finger to Vertigo.

You can also see an inevitable crossover with Animal Man a mile away.

I think the "proudly presents" thing is a nod to the old Len Wein Swamp Thing. That shows up in a lot of the old issues of pre Moore ST that i still own.

Agreed, There were over half a dozen references to the various old series of ST I found in this issue.

The point his biology teacher was making is much the argument my high school teacher made (and I saw firsthand with my short stint in the Boy Scouts). Nature Isn't Nice.

It isn't calm or balanced or neutral. It is hungry and dangerous and every creature in a biosphere will kill anything else to ensure its own survival. Periods of inactivity are because there's enough resources to go around (or more likely) there aren't too many species competing for space and food. But give nature enough life in a confined space, and things get ugly real quick.

Nature destroys and eats itself a thousand times a day. Nature Isn't Nice.

(but damned if it's not impressive and worth trying not to step on)

Plants may be violent but they don't have nervecells so it's to believe they cannot feel pain :-D
But yes, nature is cruel, why wouldn't it?
oh god this is so pretty..I might actually start to read this (even though I don't know anything about the Swamp Thing)

Depends on your definition of "pain". Some plants are capable of reacting to harmful stimuli (eg. producing certain chemicals when under attack by insects)

Well pain is something you as a vertebrate experience solely in your brain. If someone cuts off your leg and your nervecells there aren't functioning, you won't feel it. Of course you'll bleed, but you wouldn't know it's been cut off if you're not looking.
With plants it's mostly automatic responses (or simply things breaking off, like with urticaceae)
Of course pain is an automatic response as well. It really depends on the definition, yeah :)

I'm sorry, I agree that Nature is a harsh mother to say the least, but plantlife is the most violent? Have you SEEN the insect world? It's like Nature put as much nightmare fuel into it as it could so we would have to deal with less of it.

Like that video of the giant Japanese hornets going after a regular beehive? Or that weird parasite that controls its host into climbing as high as possible so its spores will spread? Or the siafu ants of Africa cleaning out everything that can't escape from them as they move through the jungle? Tarantula hawks? Garuda wasps?

I have seen the insect world, and I am REALLY GLAD that I'm not in that part of the food chain. Apex predator mammals WOOO

So between this and Hawk and Dove, we've solidly established that the new DC is still the old DC....except when it's NOT? I was kind of excited that the new titles meant everything had been reset....and now it's clear that editorial has fallen asleep at the wheel.

So either everything has already happened in continuity or it hasn't...in which case what was the point of this exercise? How new reader friendly is introducing a Hawk and Dove in media res or a Swamp Thing that talks to a Superman who remembers a major 20 year old story arc and references it? Yes, they waste time doing info-dumps...but that's not really the same as an interesting story. This was supposed to be an opportunity to reset everything...instead they've done another half-assed job, with new and old readers bound to be totally confused about the rewritten continuity (like when Superman and Batman weren't original members of the Justice League, fr'ex).

THANK YOU, for saying so clearly what I've been thinking this whole time. I mean, I'm going to miss some elements that are no longer in play, but that doesn't seem to mean to me that the new continuity is so contradictory and hard--it's only that way if you want it to be.

I grok what you're saying, it just makes me a little crazy. Not explaining the history of Batman and the Joker isn't a big deal. They are, quite literally, household names. They were then and are now. Deadman and Dove being in a relationship? Not as much.

This makes me irritated (and perhaps unreasonably so) because it seems to be feeding directly out of Brightest Day, not starting from scratch with stuff already going on. It strikes me as a wasted opportunity...not because I care about Dawn and Deadman being an item, but because of all the continuity problems that just threw themselves up in my face...for little or no benefit that I can see.

On the other hand, it may just be Liefeld rage. :)

Did anybody else notice how much nicer the new Superman armor/costume looks as drawn by Paquette than by anybody else, Lee and Perez included? I mean, the piping still looks a bit too busy, but apart from that, very nice, it looks like Superman, and you don't really notice the lack of red underpants at all.

Honestly, the only artist that really draws it weirdly is Perez, IMO. Which is...really strange.

I don't possibly see how the bio-accelerator being thrown into a swamp could possibly backfire. In any way, shape, or form.
