One of the reasons I started reading Teen Titans with the current arc was because I'm interested in a relatively new character, an Indian girl named Kiran (also known as Solstice).

Six scans from Teen Titans #94.

The issue - titled "The Power of Myth" - begins with Kiran.

I'll discuss her summary at the end of this post, but Kiran is right about what happened to Cassie and Helena. There was a page last issue that hinted at Cassie vs. demon; in this issue we see that despite a good effort, the demon is too much for her to handle alone.

Love the dig at time travel there. :P.

Tim's being hard on himself, though. There weren't any problems with how he'd organized the teams for the search they were doing, unless you count Rose needling Bart, who seems rather starstruck by Kiran. The teams were Kiran and Gar; Cassie, Helena, and Raven; Bart and Rose; and Tim and Kon.

And suggesting that Helena stay at her camp wouldn't have worked. Cassie *did* try it (out of Tim's earshot, which is probably why he's thinking it here), but Helena refused to sit back while her colleagues - Kiran's parents Vijay and Rani - were missing.

I was amused - although not very surprised - by the fact that Tim's read "a few translations" of the Ramayana. I also really like Kiran's snark.

They manage to enter the demon realm. They know they're on the right track when Gar sees Cassie's lasso - "she wouldn't leave it behind, not ever," Bart says - and Rose finds a giant footprint.

Sorry for the width of the next image, but IMO the two pages are best seen as originally presented.

During the fight:

"I can't take it!"

A wave of psychic energy - which Raven couldn't control because a) she has an as-yet-unexplained negative reaction to Kiran's powers, b) they're in a demon realm, or c) some combination of those - sends both the Teen Titans and their ambushers flying in all directions.

Rose and Tim end up captured. Tim's the only one that's missed, though, because a shape-shifting demon goes back to the group disguised as Rose.

Now, back to Kiran's summary of the Ramayana - I found it interesting. It's not exactly the story I know - for example, in the version I read there isn't a "demon realm" that's particularly different from ours per se (AFAIK it's just a different country), the stones needed to cross the sea into that realm didn't have anything written on them, and the demon king was called Ravan(a), not Rankor.

Krul could be adapting the story to suit Teen Titans' needs, like numerous other writers have done with other mythologies.

Or maybe it's just the version of the Ramayana I read? For example I didn't know, until after some online searching, that the "Tataka" Kiran mentions here and that we see last issue isn't something Krul made up.

Anyone with a wider knowledge of Hindu mythology have any ideas?

Thank you for posting this. I found Solstice appealing but this storyline actually makes me want to buy the book. Buy as in purchase!

At first the Raven/Solstice dynamic felt very Raven/Starfire from TT:Go! but it's way, way more than that...

Ditto; she's growing on me.

And we need more racial diversity in superhero comics (hence one of the reason why I admire why Marvel writes Sooraya of the X-Men to be a strong yet gentle and compassionate Muslim).

ooooh adapted Myth.... i love it when comics/movies/books do this.... :D

my Hindu mythology is limited. I knew about Rama and Sita.

I know she was kidnapped, I know about the quest... i remember Arrows... and i remember that i THINK this is where we get the famous Oppenheimer quote about the million exploding suns...

but specifics about THIS particular story are... illusive...

Everything I know about the legend comes from "Sita Sings the Blues", which you should totally watch because it's free online now. Here's a link.

(Warning: It's a feature length animated movie. I really enjoyed it, but YMMV.)

Anyway, Solstice. Love her. The thing is, she seems like a Mary Sue. She's certainly got a lot of the attributes of one. But something about her just makes them work. Everyone likes her, but you really get why. She's a ray of sunshine in the incredibly dark world of the Titans. She's bright, happy, nice, and polite.

Oh please don't let her get killed. Or made evil. Or, y'know, Mary Marvel'd.

Muahaha. There's time for that. Have to admit Kiran is like in triple jeopardy being a female, ethnic character in Teen Titans.

But yeah she is certainly a ray of sunshine and interestingly the polar opposite of Raven so that's fun.

if anything I think it points to what an unending hellcoaster fuckfest TT has been for the last few years that a somewhat pleasant, cheerful, brightly themed character pings the Sue-scanner when stood up next to the rest of the cast.

Yeah. This. I don't see how a character introduced into the storyline with appropriate knowledge and skills equals Mary Sue. She's not exactly the focus of the storyline, she's bringing something to the team.

If we were going by that rational, all of the team might as well be mary-sues.

It's kinda a combination of things. Her powers are light-based, she's the only one who can take on a monster that took out the rest of team with minimal effort, everyone immediately likes her, she makes a character in a dark place cheer up with a single comment. It all works really well in the story, but taken out of context, the place I've seen those traits most is in Sue-fic.

I'm not saying Solstice is one. She's freaking awesome.

IDK, none of that except maybe the monster thing says sue to me. She's not particularly the center of attention, she's explicitly not the destined hero they're looking for. Like I said in my previous post, it seems more like the typical status quo of this book is so many layers of fucked that a new character coming in and like... having a good attitude and getting along with people just seems by contrast to be some kind of hugely unnatural thing.

Or IDK, maybe I'm the one not seeing it, maybe the TT status quo is so borked that they just actually legitimately need Mary Fixfic Sue to come in and be like "hey stupid fucks, stop being assholes at each other all the time so hard" and then they go like "HMMMM... okay?!" and so I'm just inordinately willing to go along with that sort of thing here.

I think I like that last one, she actually is 100% a total Marianne Mary S. Suesberry Sue Von Schuestein, and we're actually all of us just willing to go along with it because these characters actually all totally do need her to fix their shit.

OH GOD

can she tell Superboy he'd look better in a jacket

Solstice does scream 'Sue' to me (the kicker is Bart's sudden infatutation) but, you're right: I'm totally willing to go along with it because a Fixit Sue is, in some ways, what the book actually requires. And some level of Sue is forgivable for a brand-spanking new character in any case, particularly entering a team book filled with highly-powered, hugely angsty characters.

The trick, though, for Krul will be to tone down her Sueishness as the book starts to get back on an even keel. Can he remove some of the lustre without making her Dark and Angsty?

I still fail to understand why ~shape-shifting demons~ from the Ramayana are hanging out in an Indus Valley site (different civilizations! no, really), but probably I should not expect research from a comic book.

It sounds like Krul has done his share of research here--I guess he just felt that shape-shifters would make for more interesting comics.

I don't know, placing Ramayana in the middle of an Indus Valley site is pretty much research!fail as far as I'm concerned. I also fail to understand why Ravan is suddenly called Rankor.

On what the deal is with Solstice affect Raven:

Raven says that she's radiating more than light...what if she's radiating emotion as well? Positive emotion. That has a bit to do with why everyone likes her right now, they're feeling happier just by being around her. But, with Raven's whole "I can't feel emotions else I unleash an army of hellspawn lead by my demon father" deal make it hard for her to be around someone like that.

From: [personal profile] pyrotwilight
That's certainly how it appears to be working between the two. Raven doesn't really enjoy being near her in the regular world but it's worse in the Demon Realm since the magics there and flood of emotions from the realm AND Solstice makes her go bonkers and get emotion filled, which is bad for her powers, yep.

If Solstice can make it five years without some writer having her be killed raped depowered maimed massively character-derailed or falling into utter obscurity I will totally retroactively give Krul credit for her, I will even go back and buy some of these comics.

Well, it was meant more in the spirit of "they will never allow this quality and general non-grimdark tone" to last, not so much that the Titans as a title was in any danger.

I'm sure someone will be losing a limb shortly. Possibly from a newer, dark version of Mister Twister or the Mad Mod. :P

My (hasty internet) research makes me wonder if the the characters aren't being co-opted into the Ramanya as players themselves. Gar is Rama, Solstice is Sita and Raven is Surpanakha.

Unfortunately it appears to be "Argh no, the happy, smiley new Titan is anathema to me... ow woe is me" and I'm supposed to feel sympathy for Raven.

Sorry, but by this point, Raven has been used as a recurring "demon-dad/demon-daughter" plot device WHEN HER DAD ISN'T EVEN A BLOODY DEMON, so often I want her to just LEAVE.

Don't forget the whole "on-again, off-again, or whatever the hell's happening" thing with Gar. At least in this storyline Gar seems to be acting much better (ie way less lovesick and whiny) than the past one.

Huh, I have been wondering, what do they call it when a comic does this? When it starts out with a sort of clean slate out of the blue, but still be connected to previous books. Kinda like the how they instantly had Hulk come out around the time he was launched into space.

Whatever larger effect Solstice is having on Raven, it's causing her to say "Cassie" instead of "Cassandra." And that's just wrong.
