It used to be that when DC solicits came out, I checked immediately if Ex Machina was out that month. It never was.
Now the first thing that I do is check the Power Girl solicit, to see who is starring in her book.
This time, I am sad
POWER GIRL #27
Written by matthew sturges • Art by HENDRY PRASETYA (but I assume that they mean Prasetyo
Cover by WARREN LOUW

Power Girl has 20 seconds to save the day – three times over! But who set up this dangerous game? Can Power Girl find a way to overcome not one but three disasters and track down the statistically-minded villain behind it all?
On sale AUGUST 17 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
No guest stars but more importantly, NO SAMI BASRI!
Yes, it's a pretty cover, if very dull. Hopefully, this will just be a short break for Basri.
In fact, when I pick up Power Girl on Wednesday, I'm going to send DC an email saying that I really want Basri to stay on the book.

Date: 2011-05-17 01:57 am (UTC)THIS is the issue immediately following his "female empowerment" story? Really?
You're trying to hurt my brain, aren't you DC?

Date: 2011-05-17 06:05 am (UTC)It's a pretty poor one, considering that I can envision a lot of new fans turning off this book very quickly with covers like these.

Date: 2011-05-17 11:23 am (UTC)This...this feels like it's sliding towards straight-up porn, with the picture's exact center being Karen's shiny-shiny boobs and a line in her costume making a mock camel-toe while showcasing that her costume appears to be something that you'd wear on a Rio beach, not fighting crime. Seriously, if I can tell that a character has waxed her pubes...maybe you needed to rework that image.
See, I have access to the internet. If I want straight-up porn fantasy, I can get the REAL THING. It's not 1972 anymore. I don't have to dumpster dive at the drug-store to get thrown out copies of playboy or the like. So how's about instead of presenting us with a Power Girl cover that doesn't look like a porn parody, giving us an actual, honest to goodness superheroine.
Then maybe I'll come back and buy the title again, like I was prior to issue 13. Thanks.

Date: 2011-05-17 02:36 pm (UTC)The problem is that there is a huge, HUGE difference between drawing a curvaceous, attractive woman whose assets aren't hidden from the readers, and drawing her with her ass sticking out and her boobs shoved forward and angled or centered on the page so that it is impossible to pretend she isn't blatantly posing for the readers.
It's just as stupid as those scenes of male characters flexing and striking ridiculously blatant manly macho poses: no matter how good they look doing it, the action makes them seem ridiculous and breaks my suspension of disbelief. Even stupider in fact, because at least superheroing has something to do with strength, while sexiness is supposed to be just a nice bonus. It's especially true when it's supposed to be in the middle of a serious scene, but a cover is supposed to give you an idea of what the comic offers, and I'm really not going to pick up a comic offering porn.
