Because a few people in the Rise of Arsenal Wins Award thread said they hadn't read any/much of RoA, and because the link in the earlier post has lots of macro-manips talking about dead cats, I thought I should link to the scene being referenced. Coulda sworn it was posted here, but if so I couldn't find it through the tags. (If someone can find it, I'll gladly take this post down.)

So, here are 2 pages from Rise of Arsenal #3. Behold the gritty realism of its depiction of drug abuse!

Here Roy has bought and sniffed some heroin. The freak-out begins with a happy reunion with an intact, alive Lian, then goes to the first page of this spread, in which Roy sees himself facing an army of Prometheuses (Prometheii?) bent on killing Lian again.

Standing in for the Electrocutioner in this freak-out is of course Bat!Dick, who is standing at the mouth of the alley in the missing page of this spread:

Roy is convinced Bat!Dick is there to take Lian!Kitty away from him, and Bat!Dick has to make with the Tough Love. Really Tough Love - like, get me to the emergency room type Tough Love.

The issue ends with Roy strapped to a table to detox cold turkey, talking with Zombie!Lian, and slowly going totally bugfuck insane in the membrane.

But I am fantastically amused that Bizarro Arsenal is armed with a quiver of dead cats.

Lian: Oh, you silly... Because, I have chosen to dispense justice in my own way, with you at my side, as my BOYFRIEND! And, to prove your worthiness, you will KILL my useless daddy, here!

Roy: Lian, why? What's happened to you? You were taught BETTER than this! How could you... have DAMIAN as your BOYFRIEND?

Lian: It's the Robin Mojo. I can't resist.

Damian: I'm NOT her BOYFRIEND! And, isn't the more important concern your daughter wanting to kill you?

Roy: When you're a father, you'll understand. But, now that you mention it... Lian, why do you want to kill me?

Lian: Because you didn't AVENGE me! You didn't kill Promethius!

Roy: I would have, but Ollie had to hog the spotlight and do it, first!

Dude, whatever he just snorted is so not heroin. Unless that weird new arm of his has done something to his metabolism. Heroin doesn't generally cause hallucinations on this scale, and users don't tend to be violent while they're high (jonesing, sure).

Why can't they write people grieving in a normal fashion? I know a couple that lost their son in a terrible accident, and they're not going batshit insane.

Why oh why did you post this? So much fail in this series. It's downright heartbreaking because Roy is arguably my favorite DC character. To see all this shit happen..from Cry for Justice, this RoA, and Titans..just..gah, people wonder why I go off the handle in that regard. Roy is by no means perfect, but he had so much potential, even after becoming Red Arrow and entering a serious relationship with Hawkgirl. He was no longer the guy who tried to add to his bed count. He was becoming a serious hero and can only go further, then he's just...totally destroyed...all because DC just wanted some type of fuckin Punisher or crazy hero when they had that in Vigilante. So strongly do I want them to reverse this. Bring back Lian, give Roy back his arm, do not keep him as a drug addict known for beating up people with dead fucking cats. Just..ugh I hate this!

The Big Two - hell, comics in general - don't have a good history of depicting recovering addicts in any realistic way whatsoever. Whenever there's a hero strung out and then in subsequent recovery, they're always depicted as just one crisis away from relapse. I don't necessarily read comics for realism, but it's laughably bad to depict all addicts as white knuckling it through day-to-day existence. (See, He Who Shall Not Be Named's depiction of Siryn in early X-Factor.) Even Roy undergoing severe trauma should not automatically equal his instant falling off the wagon after years of being sober. I call bullshit, DC.

I wonder if maybe Rise of Arsenal needs a Fan Remix with new dialogue in the word balloons. And not a parody remix, as done for CIVIL WAR and the Loeb/Cho ULTIMATES mini-series.
