It's pretty clear that Thomas Wayne receives a lot more focus than Martha, but she does get some moments. Here's two of my favorites.

Two and half pages from Batman: Gotham Streets #16.

The recently released from jail Mr. Pierce tells of his past with Martha Kane:

Doesn't Bruce's momma look so cute here? *smushs her* Why so wonderful, Dustin Nguyen.

Ming Doyle drew a comic dedicated to Martha Wayne in 2007 called "Lady Gotham." Since the entire comic is posted at her site, I'm going to assume it's alright to post it all here.

There's a lot of dissimilarity between the two versions, but I think they're both interesting.

well, the Doyle version gives us a glimpse into a very young martha wayne, really, only a moment in her life (with flashes of the future)

i think the Dini Martha is great. she's a spitfire :)

I'm happy for comics that take a much different route than movies do. Movies always lean towards the father/son arc. Batman Begins tainted the whole Bruce childhood by having the father be the number one parent to Bruce while the mother just sits/stands there and doesn't say a gawd dang thing. Makes the flashback from Burton's Batman all the better since both are treated equally.

Christopher Nolan is a great filmmaker, but he suffers from Magazine Rack Syndrome (a meme I'm hoping will catch on). It's based on this bit from The Simpsons.

Lisa; I'm a magazine rack!
Homer: Look, I'm the first to admit it, I don't write good parts for women.

Wait, can you explain Magazine Rack Syndrome in more detail?

I'm just a bit confused. I think I might get the concept, but...

Well, it's just when the female characters aren't that well-developed or interesting. And the habit seems to continue in all of a writer/director's works. To what degree the writer just doesn't write great parts for women, or the women in his work are practically inanimate objects is a matter of opinion.

Chris Nolan has never actually said "I don't writer great parts for women" but in Inception, Mal literally only exists as a part of Dom. Rachel Dawes only really exists as Ms. Exposition or someone for the male characters to angst over... even after she's dead.

Thanks.

Yeah, I noticed that about Nolan around the time TDK came out, and when I went to see Inception came out you bet I was paying attention to how he treated female characters.

I'm not joking when I was watching Batman Begins I was literally thinking 'Where the hell is Martha Wayne? No, seriously where the hell is she?'. It wasn't until the mugging scene I noticed her; somehow she was the most visible in a scene from the comic book that *had* to have her visible in it.

I've always kicked around the idea for a version of Bruce's childhood where Thomas was Gotham's DA and Martha was the doctor/surgeon.

That way we could have a clear root for Bruce's devotion to the ideals of justice as well as charity.

it'd be to easy to make their death the result of some hit then though. It'd aim Bruce, for lack of a better word, more specifically than just a random twist of fate would.

I figured that, which is why I came up with a Joe Chill storyarc that would have prevented that...

Oooo. That would also give Bruce a more poignant perspective on both Harvey Dent and Leslie Thompkins.

This might sound odd, but has there ever been much on Martha Wayne wearing glasses? She wears them in the flashbacks in DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and the glasses were also used in THE CULT flashbacks.

Miller has a thing for putting glasses on women he's attempting to make appear intelligent and/or not a sex object, and DKR was fresh in everybody's mind when The Cult was written: pretty much everyone was copying his headcanon. I think that's about as good an explanation for Martha in glasses as we'll get.

I love that first interpretation of Martha. The second I've never had much use for.

There needs to be more about Martha, about mothers in general in comics -- hell, in all media. I'm tired of the idea that it's dear old Dad who's the biggest influence in a kid's life, whatever the gender; especially that it's always Dad who's number one in a boy's life. That is just so much bullshit.

Exactly - especially when it's a well-known fact that it's almost always the other way round. Kids are usually closer with the parent of the opposite gender - sons with their mothers, daughters with their fathers. There's a reason why the terms 'Daddy's girl' and 'Mama's boy' are so common.

Slightly off-topic

HOLY CRAP, I had no idea that was Ming Doyle who did that comic! I remember reading it on s_d 1.0 and loved it, but couldn't remember who it was that made it.

The first one reminds me a bit of that comic where one of Aunt May's old beaus was a gangster.

I think I prefer the first version to the second. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like both of them, but I'm not sure I like the idea of Martha Wayne being someone who marries out of family obligation to an older man. It just doesn't sound right to me - if nothing else, I'd always pictured the two of them as roughly equal in age. I DO like how you get a real feel for her as a person, with all her insecurities laid bare, but I prefer to think of the Waynes as a happily married couple.
Also, the first has a pretty crafty way of getting around the whole 'needs money, but won't take a bribe' thing. She WON'T take a bribe, but she WILL take a donation - a bribe is only a bribe if it influences your future actions, after all. I've always wanted to write a scene where something like this happens:

Hero: Alright, bad guy, hands up! You're coming with me.

Bad guy: You don't wanna do that, hero. Not when I can make your life so much easier. What would you say to $10,000?

Hero: I'd say 'gee, thanks!'

Bad guy: I knew you'd see it my way. *forks over the cash*

Hero: Now hands up!

Bad guy: What?!

Hero: Hands up!

Bad guy: What the hell are you doing? I just bribed you!

Hero: No, you didn't.

Bad guy: I gave you $10,000 cash!

Hero: Yes, and it was very nice of you. Up with the hands.

Bad guy: I BOUGHT you! You're DIRTY! YOU WORK FOR ME!

Hero: Listen, if you want to give me ten grand, that's your business. I'd be a fool not to take it. But you haven't BOUGHT me, you've PAID me.

Bad guy: There's no difference!

Hero: There's all the difference in the world. A BOUGHT person belongs to you, a PAID person is someone you've given money to. If you want to pay me for something I haven't done, then who am I to argue? I could use ten grand. But I'm not BOUGHT unless I let that money make you mine - and brother, that ain't happenin'. I like money, but I also like justice. Now hands up already!

Bad guy: I KNEW this was gonna be a bad day...

I dunno - I'd think it would be a pretty effective tactic. If you did it a few times, it'd get around the criminal grapevine that you shouldn't waste your money on this guy - he ain't bribable. Even if you BRIBE him, he ain't bribable, and you'll be out some serious dough. In a world where money is fetishized as much as it is in the criminal underworld, that's some serious hands-off incentive.
