Oh JMS< how naive of you. As someone who escaped Michigan, I can only say that within 1 year, it'd have found a way to drive these aliens out of the state and thus lose all that business it just got. Michigan is like that.
I've long advocated that what Detroit needs is a super-villain. Someone whose plans won't be inconvenienced by little things like laws and state officials.
Not to mention their gold stock. It took me a minute to get it, but that's probably a comment on Libertarians who invest in physical gold as a hedge against currencies.
Why are you being such a dick, Clark? Look at those eyes, they're so cute and nice! Plus they help people find missing pets, which is really sweet. There are other contributions people can make besides saving the world. Anyway, your goddamn best friend has secret technology she doesn't share with the world. And you've never scolded her about it. Lois would punch you in the mouth (and damn the broken hand) for the way you're acting now.
I take it you mean Diana? I don't think they really have secret tech, and she already contributes by being a protector of all the world and spreading her and her people's message of peace.
You know, is there any reason why they're not going through official channels to immigrate? I mean, immigrants who bring with them enough gold to last a life time as well as advanced technical skills are usually not turned down. Add to that refugee status and it should be smooth sailing for them to get an official citizenship.
I'M TRYING REALLY HARD NOT TO BREAK THE RULES BUT FUCK.
*deep breathes*
Well, knowing that I just need to wait for extraterrestrial involvement will make me feel a lot better when I apply for the same part-time library clerk position as literally over 200 other people. (And yes, I'm using literally correctly).
If Superman feels this strongly about people not working to their full potential, maybe he should take a more active role in society. He could take over the country, then he could make absolutely sure nobody wasn't contributing to the greater good.
Something seems really off about these issues. Is it because we're seeing Superman telling other people how to live their lives? Because I don't particularly recall him doing that too often.
I thought the point of this story arc was for him to learn from the normal people of Earth. But maybe that doesn't apply to aliens?
It was kind of a badly-set-up gimmick of a storyline to begin with, and it looks like JMS is already running out of plausible ideas, so we're going to get afterschool specials from here on in, I guess.
Sorry Superman, one of the privileges of a democracy is that you DON'T have to contribute the maximum if you don't want to. It's arguably better for all if you do of course, but there are all manner of things in life that would be better if people always acted in the common good, but we don't enforce it.
And thinking like that is how you end up where modern America is. "I want a huge military! And a social safety net! And a social security system! And medicare! And a decent-ish health care system! Pay for it? You're one of them socialists, aintcha?" Contribute (or have a really good reason why you can't) or GTFO. "I want to buy another bigscreen TV" is not a good reason.
this is really tonedeaf work. trivializing the economic problems AND sending patronizing life lessons from a Superman who is ignoring his own potential even more than usual.
I actually thought this was a beautiful issue. I cried when I saw all those factories. I was impressed that the artist used actual Detroit factories that I've seen my whole life.
I'm really enjoying watching Superman interact with the people. The pages posted here only picked up on the alien thing, but that was just a small part of this issue. Superman's phone conversation with Lois alone made it worth picking up this issue.
Is he interacting though? He just seems to be lecturing, which is the antithesis of the stated mission which was to LISTEN to people and find out new ways to help them, not LISTEN to them and then tell them how they're not living up to HIS standards.
I have to say this. I absolutely have to say this.
POT. KETTLE. Hey, remember that violet ray or whatever from Themyscira that could cure wounds? Go bother them about that. Until you get all the tech you superheroes have working for the entire world more than just to keep you going, fuck off and leave the terrified aliens alone.
I think someone got to that in a previous reply that I didn't see, but-
AND FURTHERMORE.
That's a decent house there. They bought it. They SURELY pay taxes, because you're not getting a house like that without paying taxes on it. If they are paying for everything they use, they are contributing the same way as any average citizen. Even fans of measures against illegal immigration would probably agree. They have apparently done all the right stuff to become Americans. They are not even "taking our jobs."
Just because you feel like being an asshole and ordering them to overachieve does not mean that they HAVE to. Sure, they did good things in the end, but that was IN NO WAY the way to do it. You know what you could have done? You could have suggested this politely as a way to help the society that is sheltering them. Suggested ways that they could do it quietly, in a way that would not expose them. Hey, don't you know the owner of a big corporation? Dresses like a bat? (...well, or his kids. Same diff ATM.) And if they are too scared? Leave the option open, give them Bruce's business card, and leave.
I will say this with the risk of sounding simplistic, but can I have Superman stories where he just y'know goes to space AND PUNCHES THINGS!?!?! Seriously no one does this shit with Batman or Flash! Clark is not your political mouthpiece, this is not innovating! Stop it! I just want to read fun comics.
God JMS just did what you did with Thor, and Spider-Man, fuck I would welcome magical Kryptonian totem that gives Clark his powers or him having a secret baby with Lex... Oh wait.... well anything over this.
won't introducing all that gold cause its value to drop? part of the reason it's valuable is that it's rare. a sudden influx would only serve to devalue it.
Given how many diamonds Superman produced out of squeezed coal, he's perhaps not in any position to critique introducing potentially disruptive economic elements.
You know, this isn't about Superman reconnecting with people. This is about Superman walking the Earth hoping to find someone on Earth that isn't a self-absorbed ass. After all, the people of Earth are pretty much responsible for a Kryptonian genocide and they don't seem to care.
Normally Scans Daily turns me on to new comics. This time, I think it's reversed. I read the previous issue, but this is Anvilicious enough to make me not want to follow it anymore. Why waste $3 when I can read similar commentary in the political blogosphere for free?
Anyone able to make a list of how many times Batman (or Oracle, or any of their tech-savvy friends) has forged naturalized citizenship documents so their illegal alien friends can help them punch people?
Superboy was "born" on Earth in an American lab. He may have some forged identity papers, but he'd be a cotizen anyway. Martian Manhunter was on Earth assuming identities before Batman was born.
Founded by girl geeks and members of the slash fandom, scans_daily strives to provide an atmosphere which is LGBTQ-friendly, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harassment free.
Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.

This could not possibly be any more hamfisted if the issue was wrapped around an actual ham.
