You know, is there any reason why they're not going through official channels to immigrate? I mean, immigrants who bring with them enough gold to last a life time as well as advanced technical skills are usually not turned down. Add to that refugee status and it should be smooth sailing for them to get an official citizenship.

Something seems really off about these issues. Is it because we're seeing Superman telling other people how to live their lives? Because I don't particularly recall him doing that too often.

I thought the point of this story arc was for him to learn from the normal people of Earth. But maybe that doesn't apply to aliens?

It was kind of a badly-set-up gimmick of a storyline to begin with, and it looks like JMS is already running out of plausible ideas, so we're going to get afterschool specials from here on in, I guess.

Sorry Superman, one of the privileges of a democracy is that you DON'T have to contribute the maximum if you don't want to. It's arguably better for all if you do of course, but there are all manner of things in life that would be better if people always acted in the common good, but we don't enforce it.

I actually thought this was a beautiful issue. I cried when I saw all those factories. I was impressed that the artist used actual Detroit factories that I've seen my whole life.

I'm really enjoying watching Superman interact with the people. The pages posted here only picked up on the alien thing, but that was just a small part of this issue. Superman's phone conversation with Lois alone made it worth picking up this issue.

Is he interacting though? He just seems to be lecturing, which is the antithesis of the stated mission which was to LISTEN to people and find out new ways to help them, not LISTEN to them and then tell them how they're not living up to HIS standards.

That's a decent house there. They bought it. They SURELY pay taxes, because you're not getting a house like that without paying taxes on it. If they are paying for everything they use, they are contributing the same way as any average citizen. Even fans of measures against illegal immigration would probably agree. They have apparently done all the right stuff to become Americans. They are not even "taking our jobs."

Just because you feel like being an asshole and ordering them to overachieve does not mean that they HAVE to. Sure, they did good things in the end, but that was IN NO WAY the way to do it. You know what you could have done? You could have suggested this politely as a way to help the society that is sheltering them. Suggested ways that they could do it quietly, in a way that would not expose them. Hey, don't you know the owner of a big corporation? Dresses like a bat? (...well, or his kids. Same diff ATM.) And if they are too scared? Leave the option open, give them Bruce's business card, and leave.
