It's science versus sorcery, round 2, in The Authority: The Lost Year #7.

As of last issue, the Carrier's powerless and adrift after losing its baby universe, and the Authority's trapped on an Earth where half of America is ruled by the Engineer and the other half's ruled by the Doctor.

Step One to abducting a baby universe: Kill this alternate world's Doctor.

However, an unfortunate side effect of doing so is that the spells he was using to keep time frozen die with him. That means this world can finally moving from December 31, 1999 into the next century.

Step Two: Have your Doctor, impersonating the alternate-Doctor, ignite all-out war between his half of the U.S. and the alternate-Engineer's half.

These next pages are narrated by alternate-Midnighter.

On the next page, he thinks, "Fat chance," as we see him cradling a baby and looking out over what's either a bombed-out desolate wasteland or an untamed wilderness. The art is such that I'm not sure which.

You know when the Authority loses me, just about every time?

When they run out of ideas in a story arc and start throwing up multiple super-characters in my face(the one exception the that being the Kriegstein story by Millar & Quitely) and the whole thing becomes a boring, unreadable mess with indifferent art.

The regular book lost me a few issues back this way, and this one lost me just after the (very good) Cthulhu-Earth story the same way.

You know when they lose me?

When they're assholes I can't care about.

So all the damn time.

I don't care about that so much, though they are--but at least the Midnighter gets quips every now and then that are pretty good. (If anything, it's when they're too chummy with each other that I start to get irritated, one of the few things I didn't like about Ellis' run, that quality of sounding like one voice split among many characters; it gets cutesy) But they always start out with really good premises which they don't seem to have outlined to the end, and then one of a few things happens--the creative team changes before the end, or they lose interest, at which point we get introduced to a few hundred characters and dozens of pointless parallel earths at which point I go YAWN. It's almost like the editors go, "Well, this ship's going down again, let's see if we can get a spin-off or two while we can."

So, are they going to go touring through alternate universes, a la Excalibur or Exiles? Meh. Plus, Midnighter's monologuing lettering is slightly uncomfortable to read.

Alt!Midnighter's Frank Miller-esque inner monologue is hilarious. "She wore her attitude like a hooker wears heels" indeed.
