Green Lantern #180

Writer: Len Wein

Pencils: Dave Gibbons

Inks: Mike DeCarlo

Carol Ferris is angry that Hal wasn’t there to save Ferris Aircraft. Never mind saving other people, what about her needs?!

Hal consults his friends in the Justice League on how they balance superheroics with their private lives.

Oh, God. Hal asks Barry Allen for advice. Thankfully, his advice isn’t to go back in time to fix things.

Hal goes back home to tell Carol his decision.

Ah yes, the Trial of the Flash going on right now, back when it was a big deal if a superhero killed someone.

In the big 2, a hero deliberately choosing to murder someone is still a big deal, I think.

Though The Trial of the Flash is a story I tried to read as a kid as it was coming out as I'd quite liked the Flash title, but two years of this unmitigated dirge of a story was too much, so I am not minded to recall any aspect of it fondly.

I mentioned in my review of the trial Showcase volume that the creative team was obviously tired. https://www.skjam.com/2013/07/14/comic-book-review-showcase-presents-the-trial-of-the-flash/

(so used to seeing comics either covering up swearing with symbols or using made-up ones that actually seeing characters using words like "bastard", especially from this era, is somewhat jarring.)

At this point in their histories, neither Superman, Green Arrow or the Flash seem like the people Hal should be asking for advice sorting out their work-life-romance balance.

Next issue:
Hal: "I quit. Do you hear me? I'm never coming back to the Corps!"
Guardians: (not looking up from their crosswords) "mm-hmm, very nice, Lantern Jordan."

Eeesh. Talk about a toxic relationship. He either saves countless lives or gets to date her?

I really want to know what Ollie puts in that chili. Nobody seems to be able to handle it.

The actual recipe for Ollie's chili is out there if you look. Adapted from a real recipe, printed in an issue of (I can't remember but you can probably google it).
Funny thing is, the recipe doesn't look like it would be as hot as characters make it seem to be. Not even any Carolina Reapers or Ghost Peppers AFAIK. :)

Ollie's chili is one of his toxic masculinity flags. You only make something that's an endurance trial to eat if you're trying to cover up an insecurity. I don't know if it's ever been mentioned, but I bet Guy Gardner sits there choking down bowlful after bowlful.

SUPERMAN: Well, it's just that those of us with superpowers are a breed apart. A breed apart from you, I mean. Since you don't have powers. No one else can be Superman, but there are loads of potential Green Lanterns. Spoilers, but the Legion tells me there are at least half a dozen excellent Lanterns in the United States alone. You're my friend and I respect you, but even Ollie is less replaceable than you.

And here I thought Superman was against murdering people.

I was trying to work out how to make a similar comment, but you exceeded anything I could have come up with!

The whole Spider-Man throwing away his costume thing just doesn't work when it's transferable.
