This feels like a really weird story, because it's still got the usual cynical, slick, violent Millar trappings all around it. But the character at its heart is truly sweet and sincere, in a way I find impossible to dismiss. Huck doesn't seem like a calculated attempt at schmaltz, nor does the story seem to treat him with any kind of condescension.
My headcanon for Mark Millar is that this is the sort of story he always wanted to tell -- kind, earnest, uplifting. But he tried it and it didn't sell initially -- his run on SUPERMAN ADVENTURES back in the day didn't exactly set the sales charts on fire, though he apparently poured his heart into it -- and that was his supervillain origin story. "Oh, you want dark and grim? I'll show you. I'LL SHOW YOU ALL." (And, for a time, the market rewarded him for it.)
Yeah, Huck isn't some kind of stereotypical doofus or even a Himbo stereotype (kind of heart, strong of arm, small of brain). He's just a nice small-town boy who likes to help people and make the world a bit better.

Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
