The Porcupine wants out of the business and is trying to sell off his gear. When all of the bad guys turn him down, he resorts to asking Captain America for help. Cap uses the opportunity to lay a trap for the Serpent Society.

The previous issue was a tie-in to Gruenwald’s Squadron Supreme series, so I have skipped it for obvious reasons.

Poor Porcupine. I can respect that he just wanted out of the supervillain game and wanted to raise some cash by selling his gear. What a sad way to go. I really like how Gruenwald took the time to humanize his characters and give them some complexity and depth.

Though Porcy's rather downbeaten demeanor here is really at odds with his appearance in 285 (as written by DeMatteis) where he was much more bombastic and stereotypical supervillain. I prefer him here.

One can imagine a path from bombast to depression for a lot of villains if they lose enough fights.

Not a lot of stories focus on the sheer impact some heroes can have on villains and their psychological well-being.
Like Spidey when he stops quipping and instead goes for the jugular, as he did to Titania.

Hmm...
Which is worse for self-esteem for a new villain; being someone's starter villain, or just another random person Spider-Man beats up in-between rounds with Doc Ock?
(At least when Squirrel Girl beats people up, she tries to give them helpful suggestions on how to be a better person.)

No question, Squirrel Girl is by far the best hero at treating her villains like people. Some, like Doctor Doom, will never accept the hand that she's reaching out, but she keeps reaching. Other heroes reach out now and then, but she does it way more than anyone else.

So no one else approaches her level. But by the standards of most superheroes, Cap is better than most at it. I love how he fills the dying Porcupine's ears with validation so that maybe, just maybe, "I'm a loser" wasn't his last thought. Cap probably doesn't see that as a win...he would have preferred Porcupine to fight on and live...but dying with dignity is no small thing.

Spidey never shut up when he was fighting Titania. That was part of his going for the jugular. He mocked her every effort, easily dodging her. Then he mocked her when she screamed about how unfair it was and threw her out a window. All while he had no webshooters.

Aww. Poor Porcupine.
(And there's a bit during Avengers: Under Siege where the Wrecking Crew are smashing up the mansion and find the memorial to Porcupine and take it as an insult.
Though pretty sure Busiek's run showed it was still around then.)

Kinda weird that, if Mark G planned on making Diamondback Cap's girlfriend, he'd also make her responsible for Porcupine's death

A Doctor Who/Star Trek DS9 crossover fan-comic has something like this.

The Doctor: Well, it's not exactly a friendly thing. The Romulans have a word for it: Mentarsta.
Worf: "Respect due an honored enemy."
The Doctor: You know the word.
Worf: I am amused at the irony of any Romulan word conceptualizing "honor."
