As with so many Marvel heroes recently, the Guardians of the Galaxy have been AWOL for a while in-universe. Now they're back! And a whole bunch more cowboy-y. Also (not in the scans here), Nebula calls Star-Lord 'flesh friend'.

This is a MCU comics, right? Or at least I hope so.
There is another Guardians mini going out that doesn't completely ignore the previous run and doesn't have Lady Genocide as a member.

I's nice to see a nightmarish Groot, though. I never cared much about post-DnA teddy bear Groot.

AFAIK this is meant to be in-continuity.

That's a bummer.
The Ewing curse continues: everything he writes must be undone, every character he creates must be ignored.

It's especially galling since his work has been by and large characterised by a meditation in characters breaking out of established norms and trying something new.

and doesn't have Lady Genocide as a member.

Which one? The one that destroyed Xandar or the one who reduced the population of the universe by half?

Wait, Gamora did that?! (I assume it was not Mantis)
Was that in the latest Infinity something, in which she was angry for... reasons? I forgot or I didn't pay enough attention to that terrible event.

When killing billions is not even seen as an unredeemable act anymore, then
nothing is. And Nebula did it twice (not that once isn't enough). Once when she first appeared, and a second time, more recently, in Asgardians of the Galaxy. I wonder what Richard would think about that (especially the Xandar bit) but he is not in the MCU, so he doesn't matter to Marvel, I guess.

Well, she didn't strictly kill anyone (beside Thanos). She just amalgamized everyone with another person (well, there were exceptions. Loki avoided the effect being Loki, and Sleepwalker's people were also excluded for some reason).

I think she was being manipulated / controlled by the incredibly generic Devondra.

(or because half her soul was still in the Soul Gem or both? Something like that, anyway.)

Hey, Nebula technically brought everyone *back* once. That evens things out, right?

"Well. Since you ask me to give you a premise, but also to skip all the boring set-up, I believe I can oblige you..."

Swear someone at Marvel's got time-skips on the brain.
Spidey, Fantastic Four, maybe X-Men if we're stretching back far enough.

It's interesting that Kelly and Lanzing actually asked Ewing if they could trash the status quo he made so they could do their own thing.
Thoughtful, if odd.

Nova's gonna be annoyed at Quill, though.
"I can't leave you alone for five minutes! Five minutes!"

I know it won't actually be the case, but it is mildly funny to think this is just a random woman called Mantis who's suddenly hanging out with the Guardians, not Actual Mantis, but because they go through so much weird stuff the others don't see anything unusual about this and feel no need to ask.

(And this is, what, the fifth relaunch they've had in the last ten years? Six if we count Bendis's series as separate.
The old reboot boots are getting pretty darn threadbare by now. Pretty sure the laces are the only things holding them together...)

It's very hard to draw a line from Englehart-era Mantis to this one, I'll grant you that. I guess "this one" has been through some heavy changes. :)

Also, I miss Ewing's heroic Guardians--he had a really nice setup going on.

I suppose the consolation is it's not Crossing-era Mantis.
(... wait, that was a Space Phantom.)

Also missing Ewing's Guardians.
I mean, we all knew sooner or later something was going to happen to make the Guardians like their MCU versions (or at least how the writers half-remember them as being) again, but still.

(and we're probably never going to find out what was going on with the Master of the Sun.)

A new space Western by way of GotG?

I'm in.

I hope this idea finds its way to the MCU.

Did the writer have to make them speak like Firefly characters, too? It threw me right out of the story.

Caped Joel gave this issue a positive review stating that this issue distances itself from the movies.

And so we bid goodbye to the actually interesting team and set up from the Ewing books. Goodbye to Hercules, Marvel Boy, Phyla, Moondragon and Avril. Goodbye to fun space adventures. Goodbye to all trace of representation as every gay, lesbian and bisexual character is removed from the roster. Save for Peter though I doubt his bisexuality will ever be brought up again. I will be happy if I'm wrong but I shall not hold my breath

And hello to the dullest possible version of the team, existing in a comic that only exists to tie in with a movie because basing the cast of an ongoing series off something that will only be in cinemas for a few months has always worked out splendidly before. That's why Civil War II is remembered so fondly

And no Cosmo?

Boooooo!

If they were going to ruin all that Ewing had done during his spectacular run on the book just to make the team more closely resemble the one from the movie why off earth would they not include the best member from that version of the team?

Cosmo is beink good boy. Or good girl in the MCU

Perhaps

If it isn't to tie in with the movie this does just make this idea worse though
