Best I can figure, the cloning was justified simply as "the march of science" and progress and so forth. Not really sure what they were doing with the clones, presumably studying them and then destroying them. The scientists didn't seem to recognize him as human, and even the cop who was Spirou's fan showed no hesitation in trying to shoot the Spirou look-alike on sight.

I like the volume, but I'm really glad it didn't turn out to be the new direction of the series.
