scans_dailyIssues 1 and #2'd been Batman three years into his career on the track of a killer who patterned himself after the " Wound Man ".
In issue #2, Batman'd captured the Wound Man - and traced his origins out of Gotham City to ' the Town Without Screams ', Green Fields.
He knew the sobriquet's origin - same as the Wound Man's, illegal dumping by Ace Chemicals, a subsidiary of the Axis Corporation.
The corporation's " CEO and senior partner " Christopher Sionis (some relation to Roman), knowing that the Wound Man'd been delivered into Gotham custody, had goons abduct that living evidence against him.
Batman, out in Green Fields, sifted through the evidence in the house of the Wound Man over the phone to Jim Gordon.
Gordon's response told Batman about the Wound Man's taking: " It was Ace - certain of it! "
Batman made to leave - Green Fields citizens confronted him.
" You're trying to ruin everything. "
" Get out of my way. "
Batman fought the Green Fielders - a group who had the same inability to feel inflicted injuries and overclocked-by-adrenaline strength as the Wound Man.
' Human brains have natural failsafes. '
' I don't think they intend to kill me. '
' And when I come to, everything's changed. '
She helped Batman to his car.
Batman left Green Fields with knowledge of Dr. Hartnel, the Wound Man.
Back in Gotham, the doctor was at the mercy of Sionis.
(Oakley the lawyer was the Wound Man's first victim - Batman'd worked out in issue #1 that the ones following were people involved in other cases of Oakley's.
After killing Axis' legal minion, who'd suppressed his efforts to publicize what the corporation'd done to the people of Green Fields, the Wound Man'd turned to killing the others that lawyer's efforts'd touched - following a " map " of " wounds " and " healing " them.)
" .. I think it's high time [you] went away.
" .. you've made it nice and easy for us, haven't you?
" All of these. Adjacent to such major organs.
(After Dr. Sereika's unburdening to the Wound Man in #2, the Wound Man realizing that he should treat the cause instead of the symptoms.)
The Wound Man surged free of his restraints.
Batman, back in Gotham, had met with Gordon and learned that city government condoned the efforts to cover up Green Fields (" [The mayor] was head of the Gotham City Council when the deal was made for the land. ")
He swung off to Sionis' " second home " to confront him directly - and ran into the aftermath of the Wound Man, two dead goons and a spent Dr. Hartnel.
" That's not what happened, Sionis. None of it. "
" Sure it is. And everyone will believe me. "
" Did you know about his wife? "
" An ember escaped the grate and landed on the rug.
" She wouldn't have felt.. the flames [reach] her skin.
" .. he came home, and..
" Anything. "
(Sionis' sadism justifies Batman tearing his shoulder.)
